What is a phoneme? i) A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in speech. e.g. the word ‘hat’ has three phonemes /h/ ,/æ/, /t/. ii) A phoneme is always put in slashes ‘//’ iii) There are 24 consonant phonemes or pronunciation keys out of which 16 are like the letters that they refer to.
