INTRODUCTION For over 60 years Silverson has specialized in the manufacture of quality high shear mixers for processing and manufacturing industries worldwide. Time after time, companies specify Silverson mixers as the “standard” equipment for their manufacturing process. The key to this success .
PRINCIPLE : SILVERSON MIXER EMULSIFIER PRODUCES INTENSE SHEARING FORCE AND TURBULENCE BY THE USE OF HIGH SPEED ROTORS .THIS TURBULENCE CAUSES THE LIQUID TO PASS THROUGH FINE INTERSTICES FORMED BY CLOSELY PLACED PERFORATED METAL SHEET.CIRCULATION OF MATERIAL TAKES PLACE THROUGH THE HEAD BY THE SUCTION PRODUCED IN THE INLET A THE BOTTOM OF THE HEAD .CIRCULATION OF THE MATERIAL ENSURE RAPID BREAKDOWN OF THE DISPERSES LIQUID INTO SMALL GLOBULE.
CONSTRUCTION THE CONSTRUCTION OF SILVERSON EMULSIFIER IS SHOWN IN THIS FIGURE 1. IT CONSIST OF LONG SUPPORTING COLUMNS CONNECTED TO A MOTOR WHICH GIVE SUPPORT TO THE HEAD. 2. THE CENTRAL PORTION CONTAINS A SHAFT, ONE END OF WHICH IS CONNECTED TO THE MOTOR OR ANOTHER END IS CONNECTED TO THE HEAD. 3. THE HEAD CARRIES TURBINE BLADES. 4. THE BLADES ARE SURROUNDED BY A MESH ,WHICH IS FURTHER ENCLOSED BY A COVER HANGING OPENINGS.
WORKING: THE EMULSIFIER HEAD IS PLACED IN THE VESSEL CONTAINING IMMISCIBLE LIQUIDS IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT SHOULD GET COMPLETELY DIPPED IN THE LIQID. WHEN THE MOTOR IS STARTED THE CENTRAL ROTATING SHAFT ROTATES THE HEAD ,WHICH IN TURN ROTATES TURBINE BLADES AT A VERY HIGH SPEED.THIS CREATE A PRESSURE DIFFRENCE. AS A RESULT ,LIQUIDS ARE SUCKED INTO THE HEAD FROM THE CENTER OF THE BASE AND SUBJECTED TO INTENSE MIXING ACTION. CENTRIFUGAL FORCE EXPEL THE CONTENTS OF YHE HEAD WITH GREAT FORCE THROUGH THE MESH AND ONTO THE COVER. AS A RESULT A FINE EMULSION EMERGES THROUGH THE OPENINGS OF THE OUTER COVER. THIS INTAKE AND EXPULSION OF THE MIXTURE SET UP A PATTERN OF CIRCULATION TO ENSURE RAPID BREAKDOWN OF THE BIGGER GLOBULE INTO SMALLER GLOBULES.
WORKING OF SILVERSON EMULSIFIER.
ADVANTAGES: SPEED: The exceptionally rapid Silverson mixing action substantially reduces process times compared with conventional agitators and mixers, and can reduce mixing times by up to 90%. BLENDING: A homogeneous product is rapidly produced when blending liquids of similar or greatly varying viscosities, eliminating problems such as stratification. PARTICLE SIZE REDUCTION: Uniformly mill both solid and semi-solid materials into either solution or fine suspension.
Emulsifying: and homogenizing: Emulsions (typically in the range of 0.5 to 5 microns) can be easily achieved. Disintegration: All Silverson rotor/stator mixers can disintegrate matter of animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic origin in a single operation. Gelling and solubilizing : The high shear action of the Silverson rotor/stator can rapidly disperse gums, alginates, C.M.C., carbopols , etc., resulting in an agglomerate-free solution within minutes.
DISADVANTAGE: OCCASIONALLY THERE IS CHANCE OF CLOGGING OF PORES OF THE MESH.
