Knowing how to store food properly and spot signs of spoilage helps keep food fresh and prevent sickness.
CAUSES OF FOOD SPOILAGE: Air or oxygen exposure can make food spoil faster by helping bacteria grow and making fats go bad Moisture – Too much moisture creates the perfect environment for mould and bacteria to grow Germs – Bacteria, mould , and yeasts grow on food, making it rot, smell bad and become unsafe to eat Temperature- Warm temperature speed up the growth of germs, making food spoil faster Time- The longer food is stored the higher the chance it will spoil even in good conditions.
SIGNS OF SPOILED FOOD: Bad smell Strange colour Mould Growth Sticky texture Change in taste Gas or bubbles Soft or Mushy texture Dry or Hard texture
HOW TO PREVENT FOOD SPOILAGE Keep food cold: store in the fridge or freezer to slow down spoilage Use sealed containers: keep air and moisture out to protect food Keep food dry- too much moisture helps mould and bacteria grow Separate raw and cooked food- This stops germs for spreading Check expiry date- eat food before it goes bad Use food preservation methods– Dry, freeze or pickle food to make it last longer
