CONTEXT CLUES

CONTEXT CLUES Context clues are hints within a sentence or paragraph that helps you to figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. These clues may appear before or after the word.

Different Types of context clues

1. This is the direct definition or sufficient explanation of the unknown word. Signal words use to indicate definition/ description are or, that is called, and in other words. punctuations such as commas, dashes, and parenthesis can also be used to note definition/description.

2. It refers to the word that has the same or nearly the same meaning with the unfamiliar word. Signal words and punctuation used to indicate synonyms are the same with those used in definition/ description but synonyms only provide a similar word.

3. Refers to a word or phrase that has the opposite meaning to that of an unfamiliar word. Signal words used to indicate antonyms are but, however, unlike, although, on the other hand, instead of, and otherwise.

4. It helps you understand an unfamiliar word. Look for these signal words that indicate examples: For example, such as, for instance, specifically, to illustrate, and including, and so on.

5. The meaning of the unfamiliar word base on this context clues depends on the cause and effect relationship of ideas in the text. Signal words that indicate cause and effect relationship include because, due to, so, and therefore.

6. G iving human qualities to objects and animals
