Students will identify and locate the 7 continents and 5 major oceans.

1. Entry Task: Define the vocabulary term: continent . How many continents are there on Earth ? What continent do we live on?

2. Objectives: The students will be able to identify and locate each of the 7 continents. The students will be able to identify and locate each of the 5 major oceans .

6. The Continents About one third of the earth is made up of land areas. The large land areas are called continents . There are seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica .

8. Oceans About two thirds of the earth is covered by water. Oceans are the largest areas of water on the earth. There are five oceans: the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.

10. Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego? What continent is Carmen in? Hints : She is speaking Chinese. She will be meeting Russians.

11. Where is Carmen now? What continent is Carmen in now? Hint : She is “down under”. Next she’ll be visiting this place. Hint : It’s VERY cold here. She’ll see penguins!

12. Where is she now? What continent is Carmen entering now? Hints : This continent has a large desert, the Sahara Desert. She will see the pyramids and the Nile River.

13. Do you recognize this place? Where is she headed now? Hints : This continent has the Rocky Mountains.

14. What is Carmen now? She is heading south to this continent. Hint : She will ride a boat on the Amazon River. Next she’ll be visiting this continent. Hint : It is famous for places like the Eiffel Tower, and the Roman Colloseum .

15. What Ocean is Carmen San Diego Sailing on? Someone saw her on a ship sailing from Australia to California. What ocean was she on? The next week she was flying from New York to South Africa. What ocean did she fly over?

16. What about now? This ocean is at the top of the Earth! What ocean is it? This ocean is under India and beside Africa. Do you know it? This ocean is at the bottom of the Earth! It surrounds Antarctica.
