Case 6 Medical Condition: ADHD

ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Characterized by developmentally inappropriate inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Most common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood. Boys (13%) are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls (6%).

Patient Strengths & Challenges Strengths: H igher energy levels and enthusiasm. Challenges: Poor attention span can lead to poor oral hygiene and an increased risk for caries. These patients are also at a higher risk for bruxism and other dental traumas.

Dental History Previous Dental Care: No previous dental home. Pt’s first time at the dentist.

Chief Complaint Pt does not like the “dark spot” on her middle tooth and that it is losing its shape (Tooth #E).

Predicted Age: 6-7 Years Permanent Mandibular Central Incisors First Molars Erupted

Decay on mesial of Tooth #E, be aware of potential caries on #F due to being interproximal. Malocclusion as the two arches contact at the incisors. Oral Assessment

Treatment Planning: Caries Risk Status Caries Risk: High Fluoride: No access Diet: Consists of sugar filled snacks throughout the day. Oral hygiene: Needs improvement- Only brushes once a day without parental supervision. Dental IQ: Low

Tx Planning: OHI Recommendation Increase to brushing twice daily with parental supervision. Make it easier to brush for two minutes by playing your favorite song. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride. Aim the toothbrush towards the gumline and brush in small circular motions.

Tx Planning: Potential Challenges With ADHD, it can make it hard for them to focus and sit still during a dental appointment. Children with ADHD may tend to feel anxious or stressed , leading to the child potentially rejecting treatment or prolonging the appointment.
