INTRODUCTION Film reviews presents a person’s opinions, comments and feedback about a certain film. The purpose is to decide whether to watch a certain movie The review should give enough details about the movie so that the reader can make an informed decision, without giving any spoilers. Reviews analyze the effectiveness of the plot, theme, acting, direction, special effects, musical effects, cinematography, and all other elements that created the movie. Presentation title ‹#›
PRE WRITING Choose: The first step in writing a film review is to choose the film, if you are doing this professionally you must choose wisely and the ones that would have the most mass appeal or something that is interesting and unheard of. Who is your Target Audience: You need to consider who your audience will be. Writing a movie review for children requires a different approach than if writing for a movie club. STEPS TO WRITING A FILM REVIEW Watch: You cannot fry vadai with your mouth. To write a good review you must watch the film at least 3 times, take notes while watching. 2. Evaluate: Don’t discriminate between vadais. While giving your opinion make sure that you are objective, state your opinions honestly and impartially. Let the audience choose whether they wish to watch the movie. Draft: fry the Vadai The next step is to draft your film review, this the stage where you decide what aspects of the films you plan to include namely Actors, plot, camera angles and techniques, theme, music and BGM and so on. 4. Edit: Drain the excess oil, nobody likes a soggy vadai. Read and check your review thoroughly. It can be embarrassing to find errors in your work after it has been published.
INGREDIENTS Presentation title ‹#› PEOPLE: ACTOR, DIRECTOR, CINEMATOGRAPHER Actors: Detail who is starring in the movie and how well you think they acted. Director , producer? Who was the cinematographer? STRUCTURE: STORY, PLOT, NARRATION What sort of a narration: linear, non-linear? Core plot points, remember 3 act structure? Types of character: Point out the notable ones EFFECTS: MUSIC, BGM, LIGHTING Give details about how well the movie was shot and directed. Was the lighting good? How was the music and BGM, who was the composer? Was there CGI, special effects?
Common sections in a film Review: Introduction - In the opening of your review, provide some basic information about the film such as film’s name, year, director, screenwriter, and major actors. Remember that it should focus on a central analysis and assessment. Plot Summary – Keep it brief and avoid specific details that would spoil the viewing for others. Chalk out the general storyline. Analysis - How do the film’s formal techniques (such as cinematography, editing, mise-en-scène, lighting, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, genre, or narrative) affect the way the film looks, feels, and sounds to you? How does the thematic content (such as history, race, gender, sexuality, class, or the environment) affect your experience and interpretation? Conclusion/Evaluation - The closing of your film review should remind the reader of your general thoughts and impressions of the film. You may also implicitly or explicitly state whether or not you recommend the film. Make sure to remind the reader of why the film is or is not worth seeing.
STRUCTURE OF A FILM REVIEW Presentation title ‹#› PARAGRAPH 1 Include the name of the film, prominent stars of the film, basic setting (time and place), and genre. PARAGRAPH 2 You will need to write a short plot summary for the movie. Do not reveal the ending. PARAGRAPH 3 Discuss one aspect of filmmaking. You may choose from acting, direction, editing, costume design, etc. Be sure that you are specific and cite examples from the movie. PARAGRAPH 4 Discuss another aspect of filmmaking different from the one you discussed in paragraph 3. PARAGRAPH 5 Give your overall reaction to the film as well as your opinion on the quality of the film. Include your recommendations for potential viewers.
