In February 2020, Nigeria's Health Authority confirmed a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) case in Lagos State, Southwestern Nigeria.
How Much Was Raised To Fight CoVID-19? Between April and July 2020, N36.3 billion ($95.4 million) Spent - N30.5 billion ($80 million) On : ??
How Did They Spend it? $90,000 for face masks $about 40,000 for liquid soup $4.4 million COVID-19 fund mismanaged by 5 Federal Agencies $85,000 for taps, buckets $120,000 for sanitizer $ 1,4 million to illegal contractors
Nigeria’s federal agencies continue to shun transparency and accountability in the procurement of COVID-19 items and contracting. And with ₦600,000 for a laptop and ₦1.49 million in excesses for furniture and tents, what should MDAs prioritise during a health crisis? The Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta and Corporate Affairs Commission are the latest notorious agencies in the COVID-19 fund jamboree, misusing ₦157 million on vague transactions . Vague transactions and inadequate procurement details are part of the loopholes that government agencies and parastatals used to perpetuate illegal transactions and engage in corruption. While COVID-19 emergency procurement requires expediency, transparency is still paramount. This was, however, not the case for the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, who altered contract figures, removing ₦326 million, following an FOI request. The Federal Ministry of Water Resources has tampered with the contract amount on the Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO ); The ministry cut the contract sum by ₦326 million from ₦1.3 billion to ₦1.02 billion The move questions transparency in the COVID-19 intervention fund by a government who champions anti-corruption.
