4. Introduction
Since the birth of Louise Brown, the world’s
first IVF baby some 30 years ago, the use of
assisted reproductive technologies (ART),
such as IVF, have transformed the
treatment of infertility and subfertility.

5. Costs of ART treatment across 32 middle and high income countries shows that the average
cost of a single fresh in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle is $4,950 (USD) (Indian Rupees 352922.63),
ranging from $1,800–$13,000 per cycle.
The cost of treatment tends to reflect the underlying costliness of a country's health care
system, for example, the United States has the most expensive health care system in the world
in terms of health care expenditure per capita and total expenditure as a percentage of GDP
and also has the most expensive ART treatment in the world.
