COSTUMES OF

Maharashtra, a state spanning west-central India. It is best known for its fast-paced capital, Mumbai which is also the home of Bollywood film industry. In the city of Pune, Aga Khan Palace is a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Area :  307,713 km² Capital :  Mumbai Population :  114.2 million (2012)

Maharashtriyan Culture The culture of Maharashtra is an amalgamation of festival , dances , art and crafts , foods and costumes . All festival in Maharashtra are celebrated with abundant fervor and enthusiasm . The love for celebration is deeply ingrained in their culture and finds expression through the various occasions.

COSTUME It   is the distinctive style of dress of an individual or group that reflects their class, gender, profession, ethnicity, nationality, activity or epoch.

COSTUMES OF MAHARASHTRA As Maharashtra is a vast state, the people of this colourful state wears different types of costumes, Generally, men wear dhoti and pheta in olden day . While women wear choli and saree. But with the change of time, young Maharashtrians too are fast attracting to the latest fashions imported from the western countries

HISTORY Costume Nauvari sari During the Maratha rule, women used to participate in wars and thus to facilitate easy movement, Maharashtrian women introduced the Nauvari sari. Kaashtha, Sakachcha and Lugada Was introduced by Peshwa Women Originally Nauvari sarees were made of pure cotton. However, nowadays we can find these beauties in lustrous silk.

Pheta The royals of Maharashtra since prehistoric times left behind a legacy of wearing a "pagdi” The origin of the traditional crown of Maharashtra can be traced back to the Peshwa Era. Maratha pheta originated under the benefaction of Shivaji's rule in a town called Kolhapur.

Dhoti Dhoti is derived from the word Dhauta. This word is related to the Sanskrit word pancha and dhuvati which means " five ". Indian dhoti made of cotton. It was also an integral part of the costumes of kings and ruler of ancient India. Exact date of origin of Dhoti is not known but it can be traced back to 5th century BC.

Kurta The word "kurta" is borrowed from Sanskrit " Kuratu " or Persian " Kurtaka " which is an ethnic garment. Indians had adopted this garment as a form of ethnic wear for men all over the country.

1. Sadara - This is a half sleeve or full sleeve Shirt which is knee length long. 2. Dhotar - This is the lower garment. It has small coloured or figured borders running in length . ' Karvatkathi, Ruiphuli, Bajiraodhotarjodi , are the different distinct types of Dhotar. BRAHMIN MEN

3. Angarkha - It is a coatlike overgarment to be worn over the Kurta . 4 . Pheta , Patka - These are the freshly folded Turbans or headgear worn by Marathas. These are folded over the head with the help of a piece of cloth measuring about a foot in width and 15-20 feet in length

5. Pagote or Pagadi - made of a twisted ropelike fabric is used by some Marathas and Mali community. The method of folding these headgears varies from community to community. 6. Gandhi topi - a cap made up of Khadi material is also widely used.

MARATHA MEN 1. BARABAND I- this is a traditional upper garment. It is a overlapping white cotton shirt which has 6 pairs of strings in front on one side 2. Sadara or Zabba , which is a loose, long length shirt in cotton or silk and is worn on traditional occasions. 3. SOVALE . Sovale is similar to Dhotar but made in fine pure silk. It is available in pink , yellow, purple, orange, maroon colours. 4. UPRANE - This is a type of scarf worn over the shoulder . 5. DHOTAR 6. PAGDI

KOLI MEN 1. Bandi - The upper garment for fisherman . 2. Topi - A small scarf is tied on the head as a headgear called 'Tambadi topi' or Rumal . 3. Lungi - The lower dress of the Koli men consists of a square piece of cloth with checked pattern in bright colours

Other Nomadic Tribes The tribal men living in rural and remote areas include 'Dhotar ' as the lower garment, Sadara or Bandi as an upper garment . Pheta , Patka , Mundase, Topi are the headgears used.

WOMEN WEAR Women in Maharashtra wear saree, which is nine yards in length known as lugade . Choli a short-sleeved blouse. Working women wear chudidars, pants, and skirts these days, which are more comfortable. With the impact of Bollywood , women living in cities have become more westernized.

BRAHMIN WOMEN Nauvari Sari Unstitched garment, 9 to 11 yards in length and 50-52 inches in width Has lengthwise borders in different patterns The last 1 yard of the sari called padar or pallu is decorated in coloured motifs and patterns

2) Choli The length of the bodice is such that the upper abdomen is left bare It is short sleeved with buttons and hooks in front Has a silk like appearance

3) Shela Decorative scarf like fabric Worn over the shoulders

MARATHA WOMEN Almost same as that of the Brahmin women Worn in a way that the calf of the legs are not left bare at all

KOLI WOMEN The style of wearing Nauvari differs The sari is firmly tucked around the waist with proper pleating and its height is worn just till the knee Upper garment is a long length blouse covering the body till the waist, called kacholi Saris are plain and very bright and vibrant in colour

OTHER NOMADIC TRIBES Also wear similar clothing as explained earlier. A 'Nauvari ' and a 'Kacholi ' is worn by all. The type of Sari and Blouse material differs from place to place.

KIDS WEAR The girls below 'Parkar Polka', which is a skirt and blouse dress. The boys wore a front buttoned shirt called 'sadara’ and a 'vijar' that is a long loose pant , or wore a short pant too sometimes. A white cap was used as a headgear. A sleeveless jacket was worn for special ocassions.

There is no special dress for any special holidays, celebrations or family get-togethers in Maharashtra. One can wear anything, which they afford to, and it depends on their choice and financial conditions. But generally, for ceremonial occasions men prefer to dress in Indian style long coat, called ackan, and chudidar pyjama.. A silk cap and cadhav or pump-shoes. Women generally costly sarees like benaras brocade, chanderi, kanjeevaram and surat silka. FOR DIFFERENT OCASSIONS

DANCE FORMS Gifted with its rich culture and traditions, Maharashtra has different types of dance forms like Povada, Lavani and Koli . Povada is the dance form that showcases the lifetime achievements of the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj Dhangri Gaja , Dindi , Kala and Tamasha are the folk dances that attach to the heart of the people of this state. JEWELLERY Jwellery - It is personal ornaments, such as necklaces, rings, or bracelets, that are typically made from or contain jewels and precious metal and stones. As Maharashtra is the land of Marathas and Peshwas, women wear traditional jewelleries derived from these two dynasties

KOLHAPURI SAAJ - This is a long necklace with 21 leaves, out of which 10 represent the 10 avatars of Lord Vishnu. NATH – It is an ornament worn by women on her nose at the time of marriage or any auspicious ceremony. AMBADA – It is a traditional hair style tied in round shape & adorned with antique bun pin (ambada).

THUSHI - is a choker style neckpiece woven with the gold beads very closely.. MOHAN MALA - It is a long beaded golden necklace having many layers of golden bead strings. The layers may be 2-8, they may vary. LAKSHMI HAAR - It is also known as coin necklace or temple necklace.

Kaan / Ear Cuff - It is a traditional ear cuff studded with pearls or it may be fully golden. KUDYA -Is a Marathi brides earring.   Mangalsutra The traditional strands of black and gold beads are a part of Maharashtrian jewellery list too.

TODE -These are handmade Kadas. CHOODA -These are worn by Maharashtrian bride , green coloured symbolising fertility and prosperity. JODVI – It is a silver toe ring symbolizes the bride’s entry into a new household.

VAAKI - It is also known as bajuband. Traditionally it is worn on both arms but now a day it is worn only on a single armlet. Rani haar - It is a long pearl necklace set with three layers of pearl string as well a pendent in middle. Tikada / Tanmani - set is a traditional pearl choker style necklace

Putli Haar When you have few round gold coins stringed together on a silk braided patwa cord, you get Putli Haar The coins have Lakshmi motifs.  Belpaan - This necklace is inspired by the  BEL  leaves. MUNDAVLYA- This is a unisex ornament worn by Marathi bride and groom.

Makeup & Hairdo Makeup It is very simple women generally stick to the Natural look with a kohl and a nude or pink lipstick. CHANDRAKAR – It is a half moon sign , a symbol of prosperity .

Hairdo Marathi Women typically prefer their hair tied in a bun . Traditional updos with Gajra is common

FOOTWEAR For the use of the common people, sandals and chappals of various patterns are the most common one in the state. Kolhapuri chappals, which are made in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra are famous worldwide.

EVOLUTION WOMEN Newer generation prefers short length saris over the traditional 9 yards saris The cholis are low neck and short sleeved Women in metropolitan cities theyhave adopted the western attire of jeans and shirt

MEN Pajama, is replaced by auken, chudi-dar and pajama Turban or phetas is replaced by gandhi-caps . Men prefer more groomed look. Daily wear now includes shirt, jeans, trouser, and other casual wear EVOLUTION
