A Course Book is also known as Intensive Reader.
It is intended for detailed study.
It was called text book previously.
In India ( Culcutta) the first press was installed and text books were printed in 1824.
The Course Book should be in concord with the approach and content of the
curriculum designed for a particular subject class and age group.
English Course Book incorporates materials for English language study according
to the accepted approaches and principles.
Prominent tool in the hands of the teacher as well as the learner.
According to Herolikar, text books are the written form of knowledge and
thinking meant for organized teaching and instruction

STRUCTURE
The structure can be classified into two, with respect to content and
form.
▪Content refers to what relevant matters should be incorporated in the
text
▪The form refers to the layout sequencing, quality of paper and print,
size, attractiveness, etc.
Text books can be structural, Notional-functional or Task based
conforming to the approach of the curriculum

CHARACTERISTICS/ QUALITIES
֍It is helpful to the teacher and the student to realize the prescribed vocabulary
and structures
֍The vocabulary and structures are selected and graded according to the
principles from easy to difficult, from simple to complex and from familiar to
unfamiliar.
֍It gives scope for revising earlier vocabulary and structures and also to affirm
passive vocabulary.
֍It contains different language forms. Prose and poetry are preferably in the
ratio 2:1

▪The teachers’ Source Book serves as a hand book more than in its
conventional sense.
▪It helps the teacher providing him with additional materials and information.
▪It gives enough freedom t the teacher in the choice of methodology or even
content not conceded or suggested in the book.
▪It gives the teacher a variety of situation, example, exercises, tasks and
activities to be chosen from among for classroom use.
▪There are Source Book for classes 8 to 10 which aid the English teacher
▪There are Sources Books on evaluation for the teacher
▪These are prepared by educational experts and experienced teachers through
a series of workshops
