Radio Access Network (RAN) is one of the key parts of the complete architecture and contributes to 60-70% of
CAPEX (Capital expenditure) & OPEX (Operational expenditure). Therefore it is imperative to understand the key
terms associated with RAN & are covered in this section such as Spectrum bands, Resource Structure, Initial
access procedure, modulation of signal, multiple access techniques, error management, power control, &
advanced antenna techniques.
2. Protocols : 4G Radio Access Network
In 4G LTE technology, there are different protocols are present in Radio Access Network (RAN) to enable the
communication between user and network. There are three different layers present in the RAN to carry the
information from higher layers to lower layers or vice-versa. In this section, all three protocol layers of RAN are
covered – Layer 1 (Physical layer), Layer 2, & Layer 3 along with the simulations to understand them in detail.
· Layer 1 – Physical Layer
· Physical channels and signals
· Simulation
· Layer 2
· Layer 2 data flow
· RLC (Radio Link control) protocol
· MAC (Medium Access control) protocol
· PDCP (Packet data convergence protocol)
· Layer 3 functional blocks
· RRC (Radio resource control) protocol
3. Basics of 5G Radio Access Network
Radio Access Network (RAN) is one of the key parts of the complete architecture and contributes to 60-70% of
CAPEX (Capital expenditure) & OPEX (Operational expenditure). Therefore it is imperative to understand the key
terms associated with NR & are covered in this section covers more in depth about 5G New Radio (Next
Generation Radio access network) including 5G Spectrum, NR Frame Structure, NR Initial Access -
Channels/Signals, Resource Grid, Flexible Bandwidth Parts (BWP), Enhanced Modulation and coding, Base station
Scheduler & Carrier Aggregation.

4. Protocols : 5G Radio Access Network
Chapter 4 gives insights about the 5G NR Protocols from layer 1 ( Physical Layer), layer 2 (RLC - Radio Link control
protocol, MAC -Medium Access control protocol, PDCP - Packet data convergence protocol, SDAP - Service data
adaptation protocol) & layer 3 (RRC (Radio resource control protocol) to understand radio network in better way.

5. 5G NR Evolution
After understanding the basics of Radio Access Network (5G NR) , let’s nail down different ways to
boost efficiency and transition it to commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and cloud
architecture to create value for stakeholders
Stages of RAN Evolution
RAN Protocols – 4G Vs 5G.
RAN Architecture – 3GPP Split 2
Protocol layers – 5G RAN
Deployment Scenarios - RAN
Transport Network – 4G Vs 5G
Design and planning of 5G New Radio (NR) network in an efficient way is imperative for any telco and
therefore this section covers the design and planning from various prespectives such as Spectrum,
Coverage planning, Capacity, Throughput & Latency planning.
