COVID-19: Understanding the Pandemic and Its Impacts

Agenda Introduction Background of COVID-19 Transmission and Symptoms Preventive Measures Impact on Society Purpose Q&A session Context Setting Key Points COVID-19 Data Visualization

INTRODUCTION About Covid-19 A pandemic is an outbreak of a disease that occurs on a global scale, affecting large numbers of people across multiple countries or continents. The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most significant global health crises in recent history, affecting millions of people worldwide and leading to widespread social, economic, and healthcare challenges. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases . The name "corona" comes from the Latin word for "crown," referring to the crown-like spikes on the virus's surface. COVID-19 stands for "Coronavirus Disease 2019." It is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Symptoms range from mild respiratory issues to severe illness and death, particularly in vulnerable populations.

Background of COVID-19 Origin and Spread: Corona was first identified at 1965 .Whereas, COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. It rapidly spread across the globe, leading the WHO to declare it a pandemic in March 2020. The virus is believed to have originated from a seafood market in Wuhan, where live wild animals were also sold. About Virus(SARS-CoV-2): SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus, part of a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe respiratory diseases. Mutations in the virus have led to various variants, some of which are more transmissible and potentially more severe. Do you know when first Corona and COVID-19 was explored ?

Transmission and Symptoms How COVID-19 Spreads: COVID-19 primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread by touching any surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face. Airborne transmission in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces is also possible. Common and Severe Symptoms: Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, and muscle aches. Severe symptoms include difficulty diarrhea, breathing, chest pain, confusion, and bluish lips or face. Some individuals may remain asymptomatic but can still spread the virus.

- Although COVID have had negative impact in almost every sector globally, here are few scopes affected by pandemic: Impact on Health Systems : COVID-19 has overwhelmed health systems globally, leading to shortages of medical supplies, hospital beds, and healthcare workers. Non-COVID-19 medical services have been disrupted, impacting the management of other diseases and conditions. Impact On Society Impact on Economy : The pandemic has caused significant economic disruptions, including job losses, business closures, and financial instability. Long-term economic recovery remains a challenge, with some sectors experiencing more prolonged impacts. Impact on Education : School closures and the shift to online learning have disrupted education for millions of students. Inequities in access to technology and the internet have widened the education gap. The long-term impact on students' learning and development is a concern, with efforts needed to address learning loss and mental health issues. Impact on Travel, Tourism and Transport : Due to ever-lasting lockdown travelling, trekking, tour was almost impossible. Also, combination of rules varying from social‐distancing to lockdowns of cities is likely to slow‐down or even entirely ban manufacture of events for an indeterminate time‐period, and thereby leading to trades in retail and hospitality sectors to close.

Preventive Measures Hygiene Practices Wash hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not available. Avoid touching the face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth. Social Distancing and Masks Maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others, especially in crowded and enclosed spaces. Wear masks that cover the nose and mouth to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets. Use masks properly, ensuring a snug fit without gaps on the sides. Vaccination Vaccination is crucial in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and achieving herd immunity . Vaccines like mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna) and viral vector vaccines (AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson). Vaccines have been shown to be highly effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Monitoring and Quarantine Be alert for symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If symptoms develop, isolate yourself from others and seek medical advice. Follow public health guidelines for quarantine if you have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 or if you have traveled to areas with high transmission rates.

Purpose Goals of this Presentation: To educate the audience about COVID-19. To highlight the importance of preventive measures. To discuss the societal impacts and ongoing efforts to combat the pandemic. To provide up-to-date information and address common misconceptions. To review the pandemic status in past.

Context Setting Necessary Information: COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, emerged in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic in March 2020. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Common symptoms include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, while severe cases can lead to pneumonia and death. Preventive measures and vaccination are crucial in controlling the spread.

Q&A sessions Have humans become infected with a novel coronavirus of animal source before? Detailed investigations found that SARS- CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans in China in 2002 and MERS- CoV from dromedary camels to humans in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. What should individuals do if they experience symptoms of COVID-19? If you experience symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, isolate yourself from others and contact a healthcare provider for guidance. Get tested for COVID-19 and follow public health recommendations, including quarantine and informing close contacts. What steps can businesses take to ensure a safe workplace during the pandemic? Businesses should implement measures such as regular cleaning and disinfection of common areas, ensuring good ventilation, enforcing mask-wearing, promoting hand hygiene, maintaining social distancing, and encouraging vaccination among employees. They should also develop plans for managing potential COVID-19 cases in the workplace.

Thank you !!!
