Febrile syndrome This is characterized by: • fever with a progressive onset , which then stays continuous , • dry mucous membranes , which explains • an intense thirst for large quantities of cold water, • headaches, sometimes predominantly frontal, aggravated by the slightest movement, even of the eyeballs, sweating with a sourish odor that brings relief to the patient. In infectiology, Bryonia alba is particularly indicated for ENT and pulmonary diseases.  All febrile syndromes with: – intense thirst, – an attempt to achieve absolute immobility, – prostration with sweating that brings relief, Influenza, influenzal conditions . BERYLLIUM METALLICUM Toxicology Inhalation of fumes containing soluble derivatives of beryllium, with binding principally to the bones, leads to asthenia, anorexia and significant weight loss, accompanied by bouts of fever. Hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria are frequent, and sometimes result in renal lithiasis. Inhalation of insoluble derivatives is the source of pulmonary berylliosis , which is distinguished from other pneumoconioses by its allergic aspect, as it affects only 2% of subjects exposed. It is characterized by mononuclear infiltration of the alveoli and the interstitial tissue, progressing rapidly towards excessive formation of connective tissue in severe cases. Mononuclear and giant cell gra - nulomas may also develop in other tissues (skin, conjunctiva).

Chronic berylliosis is characterized by diffuse granulomatosis of the lung and hilar lymph nodes; histologically, it is indistinguishable from sarcoidosis . Clinically, there is insidious onset of progressive dyspnea , brought on by exer - tion , as well as a degree of cyanosis. Respiratory failure leads to an overload of the right ventricle of the heart and can lead to death by chronic cor pulmonale. Pulmonary radiography reveals reticulonodular aspects or hazy, mottled opaci - ties, which are bilateral and follow the apices, or images of infiltrate accompanied by hilar adenopathies identical to those occurring in Besnier- Boeck - Schaumann disease (sarcoidosis). Pulmonary sarcoidosis . The resemblance, indeed the virtual identity of the clinical picture of berylliosis and that of Besnier- Boeck - Schaumann disease justifies the prescription of: Other pneumoconioses . By extension, this medicine can also prove useful in the treatment of certain pneumoconioses of different origins, but also for respiratory failure from emphysematous pulmonary fibrosis, on condition that the picture described coincides clinically and radiologically. As always in homeopathy, clinical improvement depends on the possibility of reversing the lesions; hence the importance of early diagnosis and early treat- ment initiation.

Bronchospasms . Suffocating cough of respiratory infections, linked to the presence of a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for example. Acute ventilatory failure with hypoxemia and hypercapnia. Profuse bronchorrhea, increased by damp weather , with the following signs: predominance of rales in the left base revealed by auscultation,  clinically, painful sensitivity of the chest when coughing, which compels the patient to sit and compress the chest with both hands ( Bryonia alba, Drosera rotundifolia ). There may also be dyspnea aggravated by dampness or by staying at the seaside. Chronic treatment, or symptomatic medicine in long-term treatment of asthma aggravated by humid weather. Bronchopulmonary diseases aggravated by humidity. Bronchitis (of the left base in particular) with mucopurulent bronchorrhea. Cough accompanied by a shooting pain "crossing the left lung" just below the nipple ( Rumex crispus ). Pathogenetic experimentation and clinical experience have highlighted that the action of Drosera rotundifolia * is threefold: on the respiratory tract : larynx , catarrhal irritation of the mucosa, with a sensation of tickling or of a foreign body which causes a tussigenic reflex , trachea , irritation causes suffocating, spasmodic cough , mainly at night, with gasping for breath , the primary bronchi, expectoration of yellowish thready mucus , sometimes blood-streaked; Sensations : Tickling in the larynx as from a feather. • Oppression in the chest "as if the patient were withholding the air while speaking or coughing, preventing its expulsion". • Constriction in both hypochondria, which restricts coughing. Compression cough, as observed with type I sarcoidosis. Pertussis and RSV infections with characteristic coughing, vomiting triggered by the coughing fits and congestion of the face during attacks. Attacks of mesenteric lymphadenitis in children with a tuberculinic reactive mode ( Sulphur iodatum , Natrum muriaticum, Silicea , Tuberculinum , etc.). Coughing linked to tracheobronchial adenopathies (primary tubercular infections).

Coryza with loss of taste and smell . Hoarseness, worse in a warm room. Dry cough at night, compelling patients to sit up in bed, recurring when they lie down again. There may be urinary incontinence on coughing. Acute and chronic coryza characterized by: – rhinorrhea during the day, – nose blocked during the night because of dry mucosa, – loss of taste, – loss of smell. These symptoms are aggravated in a warm room and improved in fresh air. Loose cough in the daytime , with thick yellowish mucus. Treatment of bronchitis with bronchorrhea, prevention of recurrent bronchitis with the modalities as described above. CORALLIUM RUBRUM Experimentation shows that Corallium rubrum acts: • mainly on the respiratory mucosa , inducing catarrhal irritation of the cavum, larynx and bronchi; this irritation is manifested by: continual explosive and spasmodic attacks of violent coughing , which appear to be (or are felt as being) induced by exposure to cold air, permanent posterior mucous flow and congestion of the pharynx, – painful swelling of the submandibular glands; CHARACTERISTICS • Sensation that the air breathed into the upper airways is icy cold . • Suffocation before the coughing fit. • Exhaustion after coughing. Spasmodic, explosive cough, induced or aggravated by cold , symptomatic: – either of post-nasal flow (rhinosinusitis or ethmoiditis), – or of seasonal coryza. Infection of the airways, especially infections caused by a respiratory syncytial virus, pertussis with "meditation" and suffocation before the coughing fit, exhaustion afterwards. Boericke : Respiratory.-Hawking of profuse mucus. Throat very sensitive, especially to air. Profuse, nasal catarrh. Inspired air feels cold. [Cistus.] Profuse secretion of mucus dropping through posterior nares. Dry, spasmodic, suffocative cough; very rapidcough , short, barking. Cough with great sensitiveness of air-passages;feel cold on deep inspiration. Continuous hysterical cough. Feels suffocated and greatly exhausted after whooping-cough.

A small amount of thick mucus seems to become loose with coughing, but expectoration is difficult, even impossible (Ammonium carbonicum , Stannum metallicum ). Marked dyspnea with fluttering of the nostrils, sometimes cyanosis of the lips, bluish rings around the eyes, and prostration ( Stannum metallicum ) , or even drowsiness . This clinical picture corresponds to respiratory failure with hyper- capnia . Acute bronchial diseases, bronchiolitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis). Sputum is thici and diffi - cult to loosen and the tongue is often coated. Ipeca , however, corresponds to marked obstruction dyspnea , but according to the pathogenesis, expectoration is easier and accompanied by emetic cough; the tongue is clear or lightly coated. In practice however, during attacks of asthma-like dyspnea , the two medicines complement each other well and it is effective to alternate or combine Ipeca and Antimonium tartaricum . Asthma . Antimonium tartaricum is indicated for both the treatment of attacks, and as a long-term medicine in addition to chronic treatment. Chronic respiratory failure . Chronic cor pulmonale, in addition to conventional treatment. As an adjuvant to preoperative treatment for patients suffering from chronic respiratory failure. Treatment of respiratory congestion when lying down in patients having undergone laparotomy. Another antimony salt, Antimonium sulphuratum aureum , antimony pentasulfide, is indicated for the treatment of acute or chronic pulmonary diseases accompa - nied by viscous secretions and difficult expectoration and which, upon examina - tion , reveal numerous rales. Antimonium sulphuratum aureum acts particularly on the left base and differs from Antimonium tartaricum by: •the aggravation of symptoms in winter, the absence of drowsiness, frequent chronic coryza with thick mucus.

Tracheitis and tracheobronchitis with irritant cough, aggravated at night but without waking the patient up. Chronic treatment for asthma of allergic origin, whatever allergen(s) have been identified. PHOSPHORUS Hoarse, dry cough, causing retrosternal pain with burning . Atypical lung disease with one focus of congestion or more (in addition to conventional treatment). This medicine has been used in cases of acute lobar lung diseases. For this clini - cal picture, Phosphorus was prescribed around the third day, when the congestion focus was clear. Some characteristics of the individual reaction often confirmed the indication: high fever with unquenchable thirst for cold water and burning sensation in the palms of the hands, dyspnea with fluttering of the alae nasi, blood-streaked sputum, aggravation from lying on the left side. • Tuberculosis : before the arrival of treatments for tuberculosis, a high number of favorable results were reported in tuberculosis patients. Although no undesirable side-effects have been reported with the use of Phosphorus in the osteo-articular forms, this is not the case with the pulmonary forms. Longilineal subjects (see Sensitive type): on the one hand seemed to present a specific predisposition to the severe forms of active tuberculosis, on the other hand, presented with spectacular aggravation of the pulmonary tuberculosis after having taken Phosphorus in dilutions that were probably too low for these patients who are hypersensitive to the medicine. Because of this, the prescription of Phosphorus for tuberculosis used to be codi - fied , and since then the medicine has been used with caution in all patients with a pulmonary condition, whatever its nature. This quite understandable attitude was probably due to our predecessors’ lack of paraclinical diagnostic tools. Nowadays, this caution is no longer valid, because tuberculosis is far less preva - lent, imaging techniques have progressed and tuberculosis is no longer treated with Phosphorus . Prescribe a medium (9C) or a high (15C) dilution if sensitive type criteria are present, five pellets two to six times a day.
