Crush Culture by Conan Gray Analysis By Emm Wright

The video

Why I decided to analyse this music video I t is an indie pop song T he video is set in a high school like our idea I liked the colour scheme The concept of the song came through successfully in the video which is what we want to achieve Negative view on adolescent life like our song I like Conan Gray as a star

Notes I wrote for the narrative Anti ‘crush culture’ Conan is constantly interrupting intimate moments and dates Comedic Done in a funny, colourful way but the true meaning of the song is much deeper

Meaning The term crush culture is the consensus that we must always be in a relationship. This is a toxic and unhealthy view for adolescents and the song basically shows that the whole concept of crush culture is ‘stupid’, and it shouldn’t have to worry us. The picture the the left shows the notes I made about the meaning while watching the video.

Lyrics These lyrics clearly show what the song is about, and explains Conan’s thoughts towards the modern day consensus that is crush culture

He is approachable and relatable making him more appealing to adolescents. Teens who have never been in a relation or had their first kiss may feel incredibly self conscious about it, but having an idol like Conan Gray, they hopefully will be more at peace with themselves. Conan Gray’s Star Reputation

Target Audiences Teenagers Adolescents Young adults People who like pop and indie Single people

Colour Scheme To the right you can see the brief notes on the colour scheme I made. I think the colour scheme that was chosen suited the song and video a lot. What I mean is that the colours worked well together as well as signifying the different emotions Conan Gray is trying to project to the audience.

Mis- En -Scene In the previous slide I discussed the colour scheme already. The outfits are general high school out fits to properly create the high school vibe along with the set and location. The props being broken convey the hate Conan Gray feels towards ‘crush culture’. Body language and facial expressions signify ‘hatred’ and anger well

Editing The editing is fairly simple, going from performance to narrative often. W e also see the happy couple as they are before Conan comes in to ruin their moments.

Camera Angles Camera angles were relatively simple, they tell the story well. Use of close ups on the things Conan breaks as well as wide shots to show the scene effectively.
