The word Perceptual perception is the process of getting, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information. Now the perceptual Barrier in cummunication is an internal barrier which means how and what a person perceives internally about what is going on externally. As we know that the people have different opinions and perceptions ,these varied perceptions of individual gives rise to a need for effetive communication, or we can say "We perceive a message depends entirely on our point of view. Our perceptions differ in various ways". What is Perceptual barrier of communication? 2
H O W T O O V E R C O M E P E R C E P T U A L B A R R I E R T O C O M M U N I C A T I O N ? To overcome the Perceptual barrier of communication we have to look to correct positive or negative perceptions that affect how we and others communicate at any place. There could be two types of Perceptions,Positive and negative, Now overcoming negative perceptions at work allows us to highlight and encourage more positive interactions, but looking at positive perceptions, as well, can help us to view things realistically in order to solve a problem By the way, this was the introduction to Perceptual barrier, now the solution, i.e How can we Overcome the Perceptual barrier to communication 3
F I V E I D E A S T O O V E R C O M E P E R C E P T U A L B A R R I E R T O C O M M U N I C A T I O N 1-Examine idea and correct assum p tions: We should have true and real assumptions about what we are saying, we should consider (Examine) ideas about how and what will others (listener) expect, how will they decode in the situation, and for correct assumptions, we have to eliminate potential perceptual differences. Example No 1 If I'm a leader of a group and we have to present about any topic, now I have to make a map or flow chart to proceed presentation, suppose I completed that and now I want to tell my members that how will we represent, what are the procedure, here I have to examine the idea that how will they get if I start telling them the procedure, what perceptions will they have at first. 4
Example No 2 5 Suppose I'm expert in Electronic Automation, someone asks me how can I control my all home appliances through my mobile and he is completely unknown, Now I have to assume myself on his place that How would I get it, if I was unknown about, then I have to create an idea to encode the message so that listener can decode easily. THIS means I have to examine first for myself, otherwise, the listener can assume different perceptions.
2-Seek clarit y 6 If we are unclear about expectations, assumptions, or beliefs of the decoder in an interaction, confusion may arise. we can overcome perceptual barriers by asking questions to gain a sense of clarity and ensure that you and the listener(Decoder) are on the same boat. Example No -1 Suppose we are in conversation with someone individually, we are coding messages about any topic, now here we have to ask the listeners whether they are getting or not, or the perceptions of decoding messages are the same as the encoding. By doing so both speaker and listener can revolve around a single point. In case we are not seeking clarity the listener can ask at the end, Zulekha was the male or female?
Exam p le No-2 Consider your audience To be clear and easy to understand just like You talk to your 3-year-old son differently than you talk to your co-workers. 3-Restate different ly (Recode the message by using different words ) if your words may not provide the context necessary to clear a perceptual barrier, recode your intentions in different terms to provide more dimension to the statement. You can say, “In other words,” to lead into a clarification statement, provide an example of what you mean or even use emphasis to highlight your idea. 7
Example -1 8 If I'm a manager at the bank, a man from countryside comes to open a bank account, I tell him the complete procedure but he didn't get even a single point just because the words I used was beyond of his understandings, Now I have to restate the message in simple words so that he can understand. Example-2 Suppose a teacher gives instruction about the paper pattern to the CR of class, he announces the pattern to students but due to less effective words and sentences, many students ask to say again, Now he has to restate the message in simple words so that everyone can get the idea
4-Practice p ositive body language The nonverbal aspects of your interactions (body language)can communicate a lot about how confident or engaged you are in a conversation or topic. Because body language can be easily influenced by stress or tiredness, Practice positive body language when communicating with others can save us from suffering in perceptual barrier to communication because the listener can decode idea from our nonverbal aspects Example-1 A students, with full preparation comes on stage to deleiver his speech but he is speaking like a wall, no movement no gestures no eye contact, this will ruin his speech, audience may think different perceptions and he may have other opinions. O9
Example-2 10 This idea of overcoming the perceptual barrier helps more when we are in conversation with someone who is somewhat deaf (listens a small). When we encode a message he can decode it by our body language if we are not good at gestures, he can decode not as it was encoded, both the encoder and decoder will have different perceptions, here seeking clarity is also a good factor.
5 - P R O P E R U S E O F P R O P E R L A N G U A G E A N D D I A L E C T It's also very important to speak with proper language and dialect, as we know the dialect varies region to region, so it is very important to speak in regional dialect or at least standard dialect, if we not take care of dialect and correct use of words, audience may have different perception of our message. 11
Example-1 12 As in Mehran university, there studies students from different regions, some are from upper sindh and some from lower sindh, now they have different dialects of some words like(The students of lower sindh say "Te" means Three while the students of upper sindh say "tre" for the same word "Three" similarly for many other words dialect is change Example-2 If we listen any british, it will be very hard to decode his perception because his dialect of English is totally change to our dialect..Similarly it happens to everyone if he or she is exotic(not native).
For Example;Someone says the color my car is blue, here you may have many perceptions about blue color, it may be light blue, complete blue or somewhat like sky,as like lady is telling in this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNoyhOab2jc ) Thank You 13
