ABOUT THE PROJECT ~
A heritage gallery at C.S.T. station ( formerly V.T. station), Mumbai, to showcase history
of Indian Railways & Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station (C.S.T.)
C.S.T. declared as a World Heritage monument in 2003; hence need to showcase its
history and provide an interpretation
Project under the Central Railways
Detailed scheme for the Heritage Gallery designed by architectural firm of ‘Kimaya’ Pune.
Timeline:
• conception of design started in Oct.’09
• site work from mid-Nov.’09
• work executed by mid-Jan.’09

Designed as an 1500 sq ft interpretation centre for the World Heritage Site
The gallery has a collection of 160 year old documents, models, drawings, photos etc.
The Heritage Gallery showcases the vision and pioneering effort of the founding fathers of
the Railways
Tourists who admired the building from outside will now have a place to experience the
making of railways in India
Of the 3.3 million people who pass through the C.S.T. everyday, they have a choice to go
through the history of railways or former Bombay
THE GALLERY ~
CENTRAL RAILWAYS HERITAGE GALLERY, MUMBAICENTRAL RAILWAYS HERITAGE GALLERY, MUMBAI

• Visitors from all across the world visit this place on
their journey on the Deccan Odyssey, a luxury
tourist train.
• The display is arranged in sections that are
arranged chronologically and divided into 8
sections.
• Development of Central Railways and the C.S.T.
building are the main subjects of display.
• Each section is a time capsule that displays things
to recreate the period in question.
• Specially designed signage and illumination
transform the sections into visitor-friendly
multimedia experiences

• A high ceilinged hall of 107 sq m. was
allotted for the museum which showcases
the history of Central Railway.
• Design was done keeping the grandeur of
the arch openings.

AC DUCTING
• The gallery room of 27060 cu. ft. volume with a ht of 18.04 ft required 5 units of 5
TR AC.
• No openings were made on the walls of gallery room for the Ac duct inlets.
• The openings which existed high on the walls earlier for ventilation were used as
AC inlets.

• The proposed new lighting scheme uses LED (Light Emitting Diode) fittings that consume 1 watt
per hour per bulb.
• An array of 350, 1 watt, LED technology brings out the richness of Victorian architecture at the
ceiling.

LED light equipments generate
lesser heat & consume lesser power
than conventional fluorescent tubes
or other such fittings.

topee” canopy.

• Bholu, the mascot for Indian railways, welcomes the guests into the gallery.
• The journey starts with a history of discovery of steam engine and the history of the
Great Indian Peninsular Railways, etc follow next.

•The 1500 sq. ft. space with a height of 18.04 ft (5.5m) has been utilised efficiently.

• The signage give milestones on parallel events on breakthroughs in technology at
every period.
