Cultural Relativism: Definition, Advantages and Disadvantages, and The dangers of the position Prepared by: Reyes, Nica R. Cuison , Jhon Roland P. St. Camillus College of Manaoag Foundation, Inc. Brgy . Licsi , Manaoag , Pangasinan First Semester S.Y. 2022-2023

Cultural Relativism One of the most fundamental concepts in sociology, as it recognizes and affirms the connections between the greater social structure and trends and the everyday lives of individual people. It is the view that moral or ethical systems, which vary from culture to culture, are all equally valid and no one system is really “better” than any other. It also refers to not judging a culture to our own standards of what is right or wrong, strange or normal.

EXAMPLES NUDITY In some parts of the world, nudity is considered an inherently sexual thing with people interpreting it as a sexual indicator. However, in some places, being nude in public is a normal part of life. In this case, being nude is not considered a sexual suggestion but an appropriate bodily state. WOMEN When it comes to the role played by women in the family, religious practices and community leadership, some women are confined in the kitchen and are proud to play their roles. While in some set-ups, women are encouraged to pursue leadership and engage in what would be considered “men’s field”. PREMARITAL SEX Here in the Philippines, premarital sex is morally unacceptable. In other country, teenagers want to lose their virginity at a young age.

Consequences of Taking Cultural Relativism Seriously We could no longer say that the customs of other societies are morally inferior to our own We could decide whether actions are right or wrong just by consulting the standards of our society The idea of moral progress is called into doubt

ADVANTAGE DISADVANTAGE It is a system which promotes cooperation. It creates a society where equality is possible. People can pursue a genuine interest. Respect is encouraged in a system of cultural relativism. Cultural relativism creates a society without judgment. It could limit moral progress. It draws people away from one another. It would create chaos. It creates a system that is fueled by personal bias. It could limit humanity’s progress.
