Firstly used the Word Culture “Anthropologist Edward B. Tylor” in 1871

Meaning & Definition 1. According to Linton – “culture is social hereditary, which is transmitted from one generation to another with accumulation of individual experience”.

Meaning & Definition 2. According to John – “Culture is the way of life which is transmitted from generation to generation."

Meaning & Definition 3. “culture consists of the beliefs, systems of language, communication, and practices that people share in common and that can be used to define them as a collective”.

Meaning & Definition 4. According to Clyde – “culture as a design for living’ held by the members of a particular society”.

Nature & Characteristics of Culture

1. Culture is a Social – Culture is a Social ,It does not exist in isolation. It is a product of Society and shared by all the members of the society.

2. Culture is Learned – Culture is not inherited biologically, but learned socially by man.It does not an inborn tendency. Culture is often called the learnt way of behaviour.

3. Culture is Shared – Culture is not something that an individual can posses. Ex. Tradition,morals,beliefs are shared by people of a group or society.

4. Material & Non- Material Product- Culture include both material and no material products of group life . Material Product include object are related to the physical aspects of our life such as clothes, food items, household goods . Non – Material Product include language, belief, thoughts .

5. Culture is Transmitted – Culture is the socially transmitted behaviour patterns. Cultural values ,beliefs & tradition are transmitted not through genes but by means of language from one generation to other , language is the chief vehicle of culture.

6. Culture is Continuous – Culture exist as a continuous process adding new culture traits to it constantly. As cultural practices are transmitted from one generation to the next ,more & more knowledge is added to it .

7. Culture is varies from society to society - Culture is not uniform in all societies, it differ with place ,time, community. Each society has its own traditions, practices & beliefs.

8. Culture Provides Identity - Culture provides identity to its members through established values & shared beliefs, This identity Provides a feeling of belongings and security.

9. Culture is dynamic & adaptive - Cultural practice change when culture comes into contact with other cultures. Culture transform constantly with new ideas & techniques with modification.

10. Culture has common belief & practice- Members of culture share the same beliefs, tradition & practices . Individual are expected to follow an ideal pattern of behaviour so gain social acceptance from people with in the same culture.
