Socialization and Personality What is Socialization ? “ Socialization means the process by which an individual learns to-satisfy his needs in socially acceptable way, to move within the rules of his society and to share in his society’s values.” ( Hillgard ) “ Socialization is the process by which a person develops from a mere biological organism, a sat birth, to an adequate adult, in a Psychological sense until he learns to display a measure of the prevailing adult attitudes, values, beliefs and knowledge of the subculture to which he belongs.” ( Bigge and Hunt ).
“Social development is the progressive improvement of the individual , though directed activity in the comprehension of the social heritage and flexible behavior patterns.”( Crow and Crow ). “Social growth is the result of Social functioning under the particular set of circumstances.” ( H.P. Smith ) Social Development

What is Personality ? “Personality may be defined as the most characteristic integration of an individual’s structure, modes of behavior, interests , attitudes capacities, abilities and aptitudes.” ( Munn, N.L ) “Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those Psycho-Physical systems that determine his unique adjustment to his environment.” ( Allport , G.W ) Definition of Personality

c. Theories of Personalities C.H. Cooley: The famous American Sociologist C.H. Cooley presented the theory of looking Glass self. According to him as one gausses of his facial features by looking at mirror similarly a person tries to understand him or her self in the light of the views of the other. In simple words environment and society are sort of mirror. We establish an opinion about our self on the views of the others about us. So our opinion about our self is the result of the others impressions abut us. a) How we look to others- its concept b) How others understand about us- its concept c) The sense of Pride and Shame from this concept
G.H. Mead: Mead presented the Symbolic Interaction. According tom this theory in the formation of Personality development his own thoughts and the thoughts of others play very important role. He has divided the personality in to two parts. 1st is “ Me – Others ” 2nd is “ I ” Me is a such aspect of personality which is acquired from environment , parents and friends. Here our action are the result others impressions. On the contrary “ I ” is a 2nd aspect of Personality which is named individual aspect. In this aspect ego is vital which distinguishes from us from others. Before every one there is one ideal to which he or she tries to follow. So our personality is a organized ability.
Emile Durkheim: Durkheim has given extra ordinary importance to society in the formation of personality development. This is theory, is known as Group Mind theory. Besides Durkheim some other sociologists such Lebon , G.W Sumner have emphasized on Group Mind. This group mind id formed of Mores and Norms, Creed or another word Social Heritage. In this theory an individual has been out rightly ignored. Where as society and individual both effect each other.
Freud’s Theory: in the formation of personality development, Freud given great stress on Unconscious and Sex. He divides the Human personality in to three parts. 1) ID 2) EGO 3) Super EGO
Adler: according to Adler sense of superiority is the base of human personality. He says that every person wants more and more attention and love. It is because of sense of superiority. If every desire and anxiety. This anxiety is further transformed into mental diseases. Adler gives great importance to birth of child in personality development e.g. if he or she is a first child he will be the focus of attention of the parents but after the birth of other children he has to suffer from shock due to which he starts hate other sibling. He does jealousy from other children and tries to harm them .
Jung: according to Jung: according to Jung the personality may be divided in to two parts. 1) Extrovert 2) Introvert 3 ) Ambivert
