DESIGN FOR CHANGE SCHOOL CHALLENGE-2011
“TO BRING SELF AWARENESS TOWARDS A SYSTEMATIC WAY OF LIFE”
PROJECT REPORT
D.A.V. Public School, Kansbahal took up the project in the school campus from 5
th
September, 2011
to 11
th
September, 2011 as a part of “DESIGN FOR CHANGE SCHOOL CHALLENGE-2011 .”
WHY WE CHOSE OUR SCHOOL AS THE PROJECT SITE.
Discipline is an integral and essential aspect of school life. If we maintain discipline in govt. offices,
software companies and armed forces, why not in school, which is the first place to learn
discipline? School is the second home of a child. So, it is very important to learn discipline in
school. Discipline doesn’t mean that the child is not free to do anything. Discipline means to do
things in a systematic way, like coming to school on time in neat, tidy and well ironed uniform,
doing homework properly, maintaining discipline on the road and in the school campus, facing a
problematic situation and finding solution for it, maintaining good health, developing positive
attitude towards others etc. If we learn all these things in school, then we will not face any
problems in future. While a child is in school, a teacher is expected to act as a substitute parent,
with many forms of parental discipline or rewards open to them. Love and care is necessary
towards a child for his/her development. And so, the best place to teach a child to be disciplined is
school. The school is the actual place to form the character of a child, as at school a child gets more
pressure to change than at home.
That’s why we chose our school as the project site.
To conduct the programme systematically Mr. A.K.Nayak was nominated as mentor. The students
of classes VIII & IX (English medium) were divided into nine groups to maintain discipline
everywhere in the school, under the supervision of the principal Mrs. Rashmi Mishra and In-
Charge teachers. The name of the groups & the leaders are as follows:–
GROUP NAME GROUP LEADERS
Swami Vivekananda group --- Master Mahenk Pattnaik
Netajee Subhash group --- Master Bibhudatta Palai
Utkal Gaurab Madhusudan group --- Master Smruti Ranjan Rana

self-discipline among the students of the school and was conducted on the following dates.

Experts’ Advice and Awareness speech:
“Discipline is something that is to be done FOR students, not TO them”. An education programme
related to discipline was given by Mr. Moses Lakra, squadron leader in the Indian Air Force and
Mr. Gaurav Rai, ex-student of the school. The students were counselled on the importance of
discipline in day to day life. They were motivated to develop qualities of character, courage,
comradeship, discipline, secular outlook, spirit of adventure, sportsmanship and the ideals of
selfless service among them. They were also motivated for active participation in various activities
to learn dignity of labour and ignite the creative instinct that lies latent in them.

Outdoor discipline:
Outdoor discipline plays an important role in one’s life. The students were taught about the
importance of outdoor discipline and their activities were monitored by the group members. On
the road, discipline was observed by the students of different groups in these four days.
Mass discipline:
Mass discipline plays a very dominant role in inculcating social ethos in the youth of the country. It
undertakes various social service activities like preservation of environment and ecology, blood
donation campaigns, literacy programmes and cleanliness drives. It trains the students to become
responsive individuals, sensitive to the needs of the community.
All the students alongwith the NCC Students and school cabinet showed mass discipline through
mass drill and march past.
Morning Assembly:
The goal of discipline is to teach the child obedience, that is, true obedience that comes from the
heart of the child out of love for God and a desire to obey His commandments. Prayer gives us
2

hope and strength to face the challenges of life and helps us get through the day. Students were
instructed repeatedly to obey their parents and, by extension, all those who are in authority over
them.
Uniform Check:
The discipline committee members were motivated to be examples to other students in wearing
proper and neat uniforms. Throughout the week, they checked the uniforms of the other students
and reminded them to wear proper uniform every day.
Classroom visit:
Classroom discipline is about guiding students to change their behaviour. Gentle reminders were
given to the students about discipline in the classroom by the group members who visited the
classrooms on a regular basis throughout the week. Peer pressure yielded favourable results. The
classrooms were quieter and more disciplined than before the beginning of the discipline week.
Library visit:
School library is the intellectual power house of the school. So, we paid special attention to
discipline in the library and proper use of books and magazines. Group leaders gave tips on the
proper use of the library. They helped the librarian in maintaining pin-drop silence to enable
students to make the best use of the library periods.
Concentration & Creativity:
Yoga :
Yoga generates positive emotions and compassion. Regular practice of yogic postures enhances the
ability of students to concentrate, to deal with impulsive behaviour, and to think more clearly.
Yoga helps mental equilibrium and self-control. Yoga offers students a safe and balanced way for
them to relate to themselves and to their surroundings, inner & outer awareness. Practising yoga
increases self-confidence as the students measure their own individual success and improvement.
Students were advised to develop a sense of well-being, and increase their capacity of mental
concentration by practising yoga & meditation regularly.
Music:
Lessons in music have shown their benefits by increasing the creativity and ability of the mind as
well as decisive and contradictory philosophy. These are some essential skills that are needed by
the brain to develop into a higher being for the present and future work place. Music is regarded to
be an important part of the curriculum and it plays a vital role in understanding the culture. Music
is a true demonstration of the traditions, community culture, aspirations and accomplishments of
humankind. Students were enlightened about the necessity of music in their life and were
encouraged to adopt it in their life as a means of relaxation and a source of inspiration.
Art/SUPW:
Art is an important subject, not only on its own but in the rest of education as well. Art plays an
important role in almost all aspects of education, from creativity to interpretation to discussion to
understanding design. A creative mind is needed to understand ancient arts and to brainstorm
3

solutions to science projects and experiments. Other subjects such as math, which don't require
much creativity, still use the same areas of the brain that are strengthened by art projects.
The group leaders visited the art classes and with the help of Art teacher, explained the students
about the Importance of Art in Education.
Gardening:
“Look deep into nature,
And then you will understand everything better.”
We believe gardening in schools is a necessity. So, the group members helped the gardeners to
prepare flower beds and planted flowering plants in the school garden. These Hands on experience
helped them to learn life skills, and contributed to their emotional and physical health.
Students were enlightened about the necessity of gardening in their everyday life and they were
advised to be environment friendly.
Learning by doing:
Practice Makes Perfect. Practical learning offers opportunities for the students to learn to handle
chemicals and instruments safely and with confidence, to develop basic manipulative skills.
Students have much to gain from experimental work, whether it is performed by them, or by
simply watching others perform experiments. Laboratory practicals at school give to the students a
good grounding in the basic principles of science.
Students were demonstrated about the importance of Practical Learning.

Health awareness:
“Sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet
Are the six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it.”
Maintaining good health is part of discipline. Health is a state of complete harmony of the body,
mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of
the soul opens.
Although it was a Sunday, students were called on this day for a health checkup programme. Along
with the health checkup of the students, health awareness speeches were given by health experts.
With this our programme “Design for change school challenge-2011” came to an end, but we
decided it is just the beginning and it is to be continued . . . . . . . . .
