D avis A ntarctic R esearch S tation

History The Davis Antarctica research station was established in January 1957. The research station was named because of the man, John King Davis who was a caption of a ship in the expedition led by Shackleton and Mawson.

Location The latitude is 77º58’E and the longitude is 68º35’S. This station is the most southerly Australian A ntarctica station. It is 4731km from Perth (Western Australia) and 4826km from Hobart (Tasmania). The Cassey, Mawson and Mirnyy stations surround the Davis station.

Appearance The station has a large dinning room several sitting areas and places to entertain people such as a library , a small spa and sauna, a climbing wall and a 8 ball table. On the outside there is a giant ball shaped radio receiver . There are some building that are two but are joined with a walkway.

Governor The Davis station is an Australian station therefore it is governed by the Australian government. Under the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population & Communities. Australian Antarctic Division.

Weather The average maximum temperatures is 3.1º C in January, -0.3ºC in February, -5.6ºC in March, -10.4ºC in April, -12.7ºC in May, - 12.4ºC in June, -14.4ºC in July, -14.4ºC in August, - 13.1in September, -9ºC in O ctober, -2.4ºC in November and -7.4ºC in December. The average minimum is - 1.2ºC in January, -4.5ºC in February, -10.8ºC in March, -16.1ºC in April, -18.9ºC in May, -18ºC in June, -20.6ºC in July,

Purpose The purpose for this station is that so scientists can stay near their destination so they don’t have to walk that far to get there. It was also made so the scientists don’t always have to sleep in their sleeping bags.

Living there Living there would be extremely cold and even thought your in the station. In summer you would have to share a room since more people come to Antarctic and then and in winter you would probably have your own room. Davis has a limited water supply and in summer, showers are restricted, often to 1 every 3 days and for a maximum duration of 3 minutes.
