Question:
•Compare the ways in which religion shaped
the development of colonial society (to 1740)
in Two of the following regions:
New England
Chesapeake
Middle Atlantic

New England
•The Great Awakening (John Edwards):
Emphasized growing diversity within religion
•This construction of own beliefs somewhat
foreshadowed the political formation of the
north. Liberal and open ideas represent the
Federalist/Liberal political ideals that NE
developed as time passed.
•Puritanism gave them a sense of unity in
society.

Chesapeake
MD,VA,NC,SC,GA
•Though the people of the Chesapeake area
had some religious freedoms, the Church of
England still reigned supreme.
• The diversity of people demonstrated a
“Melting Pot”. ie: Germans
•John Wesley founded the Methodist church
•Not very populous

Middle Atlantic
•Quakers
•They were challenged by Anne Hutchenson
who argued predestination
•Roger Williams was radical-He represented
the rebellious nature of the northern-middle
colonies felt
•Rhode Island had freedom of Religion

Thesis
•Religion played a role in shaping the colonial
society by granting the people freedom and a
chance to create diversity with their individual
ideas by forming new churches.
