Deakin University’s School of Information
Systems has partnered with IBM to launch
Australia’s first Centre for Excellence in Business
Analytics. The new collaboration is part of an
ongoing effort to expand and strengthen student
skills and understanding of big data and analytics
to meet the growing demand for highly skilled
analytics workers.
‘We anticipate students in the Master of
Commerce and MBA courses will be able to
specialise in Business Analytics and students
from all degrees across Deakin will have the
opportunity to take elective offerings in Business
Analytics. Deakin’s collaboration with IBM is a
step forward in terms of fostering these skills
with the next generation of students,’ said Head
of School of Information Systems Professor
Dineli Mather.
Businesses today have to cope with massive
amounts of data that are being generated daily
due to social networking sites and through the
proliferation of mobile devices. IBM estimates
2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created every
day from a variety of sources including posts to
Facebook and Twitter, digital pictures and videos,
purchase transaction records, and cell phone
GPS signals, to name a few. With the creation
of this amount of data, it is essential the next
generation of business and marketing leaders
possess strong analytics skills to garner insights
from the flood of information, in this increasingly
complex business environment.
IBM is providing Deakin access to curriculum
materials, project-focused case studies, and IBM
thought leaders as guest speakers to give students
hands-on experience with big data.
The new centre will be based at the Melbourne
Burwood Campus on Elgar Road and will act as a
springboard for the University’s plans to deliver
a suite of postgraduate programs in Business
Analytics, as well as showcasing IBM’s business
analytics technology solutions.
Deakin joins Yale School of Management, the
Telfer Business School in Ottawa and Nanyang
Polytechnic University in Singapore as the fourth
university globally, to establish an academic
alliance and a Centre of Excellence.

Elfleda Yuen stepped off a plane into Australia for
the first time almost three years ago and has been
pleasantly surprised at, not only her studies, but
her overall Australian experience.
‘When I left Hong Kong, I didn’t know what
to expect. Deakin wants students to get work
experience, have a social life, enjoy Melbourne and
learn skills they can use anywhere in the world.
Deakin encourages students to have a balanced
life!’ Elfleda says.
‘The new “Worldly” Deakin branding highlights that.
I think Deakin is very student-focused compared
to other universities and being able to pick units
from a range of subjects really helps your resume.
You can study photography, arts, business and other
practical skills in addition to your majors,’ Elfleda says.
Elfleda and her parents originally chose Deakin
because two relatives live in Melbourne and Deakin
offered all the subjects she wanted to study. ‘I
absolutely love Melbourne. Its food, gardens, art,
shopping and especially the ice-skating,’ she says.
Elfleda has now finished exams for the year and
is looking forward to another Australian summer.
‘I often catch up with friends for traditional Italian
food on Lygon Street. Some of the best Italian food
is in Melbourne!’
Passion is what attracts Elfleda to the Italian
culture and she hopes to show that to her future
employers. ‘I would like to work in the advertising
industry where I can get to be creative and be
constantly challenged,’ Elfleda says.
Deakin’s study abroad and exchange programs give
students more opportunities to travel. ‘I’d like to see
Italy again but I have started learning Mandarin
which will improve my job opportunities further.’
‘Although I am learning a lot, I am also putting
things into practice. The way that Deakin teaches
and its overall set up – it really helps you achieve
that balance in life.’

CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B Each year, Deakin’s Alumni Community Awards
recognise, acknowledge and promote prominent
alumni around the world who have achieved
outstanding success in their communities,
professions or have provided outstanding service to
the University.
Recent graduate of Master of Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages student, Muhammad
Aulia Hanan, was given the Deakin Young Alumni
of the Year award in recognition of his outstanding
contribution to education, the humanitarian effort
and reconstruction of Aceh.
As an inspirational member of Deakin’s Aceh Alumni
Chapter, Mr Hanan is part of a team of graduates
who are working as part of a partnership between
Deakin University and the Indonesian Government
to help rebuild the tsunami-shattered Aceh
Province, by providing community development
programs for teachers and students from
disadvantaged backgrounds. He was also actively
involved in the establishment of the Deakin Aceh
Alumni Chapter.
Since completing his degree at Deakin and
returning to his homeland, Mr Hanan has displayed
outstanding leadership and dedication in the
rebuilding efforts (despite losing his own home
in the disaster), of the badly affected educational

sector of Aceh, where over 3000 educators lost
their lives in the disaster.
He has also been called upon by the local Aceh
Government and World Vision International to
provide strategic advice, guidance and leadership
within the local education system. As a result he has
taken on the management of various planning and
financial resource acquisitions and quality control
of capacity building projects.
Deakin congratulates Mr Hanan for his past
achievements and wishes the best for his future
endeavours.
