WHAT IS DEBEAKING? Debeaking is the trimming of beak of birds. It can be practiced in chicken, duck, turkey etc.
AGE OF DEBEAKING: First debeaking of chicks at 7-10 th old. Researchers suggest debeaking at th old causing least stress on chicks. Second debeaking at 16 weeks age (prior to egg production). No debeaking after 16 weeks only in exceptional condition.
HOW MUCH TO DEBEAK? The upper beak has to be trimmed 2/3 rd and the lower beak 1/3 rd portion. 2/3 rd of upper beak 1/3 rd of lower beak
ADVANTAGES Prevents the vices like feather picking, vent picking, toe picking, cannibalism, egg breaking etc. More uniformity of birds in flock Utilizes complete and balance feed properly Prevents feed wastage Improves feed efficiency
DISADVANTAGES Birds lose body weight for 1-2 weeks post debeaking Growth rate is reduced and it will take 10-20 weeks for a bird to attain body weight of a similar non- debeaked birds Decrease in egg production without effecting egg size Slight delay to attain sexual maturity Reduced body weight at sexual maturity
METHODS OF DEBEAKING: Mechanical : By sharp blade/ scissors. Infrared light: Damages the tip of beak so as to shed it. Electrical : The tip of beak is exposed to electrical current to shed the tip of beak. Hot blade: Infra red hot blade is used to debeak .
PRECAUTIONS : Not in diseased birds or when there is stress (transportation, deworming , vaccination, mangentak stress etc). Sharpen and heat the blade to red hot to ensure proper trimming. Cleaned and disinfected debeaker regularly to avoid cross contamination of disease among the birds. Arrangement of antiseptic solution (apply on injury site), anti stress B complex (reduce stress) and vitamin K (control bleeding).
