The purpose of lubrication oil purification

+ Conserve oil
— Large quantities are used in lubricating systems
— It is expensive to renew
— Adequate supply of new lube oil is not available
for complete renewal

Lube oil will not wear out

Lube oil in a marine systems is used over and
over

Foreign matter robs the oil of its lubricating

qualities

— Water

— Dirt

— Sludge

Methods of lubricating oil purification

* Settling — the difference in specific gravity
allows substances to separate

— Example — a bottle of oil, dirt and water mixture
+» Dirt and sludge settle to the bottom
+ Water settles on top of the dirt
* Oil settles on top of the water

+ Oil must be heated to 180°F for best results

Methods of lubricating oil purification

« Centrifugal Force
— Imposed on the oil, water, and dirt mixture

— Causes the suspended substances to separate
— This process is faster than settling

« Dirt and sludge settle to the outside of the bowl

+ Water settles next to the dirt in the bowl

* Oil settles on to the inside of the bowl
