Douglaswasaleadingadvocateofindividualrights.He
retiredin1975withatermlastingthirty-sixyearsand
remainsthelongest-servingJusticeinthehistoryofthe
court.ThefollowingexcerptistakenfromOfMenand

bottomofthepool.Whilegoingdownheplannedtomakeabigjump
upwardsbutcameupslowly.

Starkterrorseizedhim.Hetriedtoshoutbutcouldnot.Ashewent
downthepoolforthesecondtime,hetriedtojumpupwardsbutitwas
sheerwasteofenergy.Terrorheldhimdeeperanddeeper.Duringthe
thirdtrial,hesuckedwaterinsteadofair.Lightwasgoingoutandthere
wasnomorepanic.So,heceasedalleffortsandhebecame
unconscious.Hecrossedtooblivion.Whenrevived,hefoundhimself
vomitingbesidethepool.Hewasinthegripoffearofwaterandit
deprivedhimofthejoysofcanoeing,boating,swimmingandfishing.
Later,toovercomehisphobiaforwater,hehiredaninstructortolearn
swimming.Theinstructortaughthimswimmingpiecebypiece.Hewent
todifferentlakestoswimandfoundtinyvestigesoffearstillgripped
him.Hechallengedthefearandswam.Swimmingupanddownthe
WarmLakehefinallyovercamehisfearofwater.Herealisedthatin
deaththereispeaceandthereisterroronlyinfearofdeath.Willtolive
isstrongerthanfearofdeath.
