Relative Clauses Defining and non- defining

Reltive Clauses modify the antecedent That is the girl . She lives next door . That is the girl Who lives next door . The hotel is very nice . I told you about it . The hotel that I told you about is very nice .

Relative Clauses can be: Defining : The extra information they give is important in the sentence . NON- DEFINING: They just add extra information .

RELATIVE CLAUSES Defining : The doctor who operated him is a very skilled profesional . Non defining : The doctor, who is a very skilled profesional, is in a conference in London.

Relative pronouns : who . Whose , whom , which , that , when , where Defining : Who / whom / that : for people Which / that : things Time: when Possession : whose Places: where Non- defining : Who / whom Which Where Whose when

Omission of the relative pronoun Only in defining when it is not the subject of the sentence : He is the doctor that operated him . That = subject : no omission possible The book that you gave me is very interesting . That = object : ommision is possible The book you gave me is very interesting . Non defining : The relative pronoun cannot be ommitted .
