Deforestation carbon emissions in international trade: EE

who are the producers and who are the consumers?

Shown are CO, emissions produced from tropical deforestation for agricultural products, and where the

products driving this deforestation are finally consumed. This Is measured as the annual average from 2011 to 2014.

It is crucial for Kenya, as a producer and exporter of
commodities with deforestation risk, to decouple agricultural
productivity from forest loss.

Keen on Advancing trade for sustainably produced forest risk
products as an approach to low-emission food systems

We recognize that producers need incentives and government
needs to incentivise trade in sustainably produced forest risk
commodities.

We need commitment from partners to increase the market
for deforestation-free commodities —,

When combined with in-country incentives and engagement
with consuming countries, this can promote sustainable, low-
emission food systems.

What can government do

1.Collaborate to optimize the efficacy of
trade or trade-related actions in mitigating
the causes of deforestation.

How
through Strategic partnerships

« Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership to
discuss trade in Agriculture and protection of
critical ecosystems-

+ FCLP- The Forest & Climate Leaders
Partnership (https://forestclimateleaders.org)

+ Many others are welcome

* Kenya wants to expand sustainability
concepts in the 15 B tree planting initiative to
go beyond beyond conserved forests and
engage farming communities and private
sector investors to produce export
commodities without
= causing deforestation
" Reducing emission using sustainable feed

management

2. The government investigates, develops,
and implements policy solutions, incentive
mechanisms, and other steps to reduce the
market dynamics that contribute to
deforestation through trade-related actions .

Research to co create with different

stakeholders

* Verification protocols for commodities free from
deforestation.- including methane reduction feeding
systems:-

* Gathering evidence to demonstrate progress and
achievement in deforestation-free commodity
production

* Traceability- establishment of assurance systems to
demonstrate zero deforestation from the production
of forest risk commodities

e Acces policy aans and advice for nolicv mixes that

Engage private sector players as key actors in the food

systems value chains e,g development of sustainable

timber products

* Formed a technical working group comprised of relevant
stakeholders to formulate action points encompassing
policy development, public communications, and the
initiation of pilot projects within the country.

Leverage of existing opportunities

Existing policies and strategic plans - where

deforestation reduction is articulated

+ Climate change act

+ NDCs

+ Agricultural transformation strategies

* Climate smart Agriculture strategy

* REDD program where a baselines are already
developed presented

* STI policy on climate change adaptation and
mitigation
