TYPES OF RESTORATIONS Various types of restorations are, Direct restoration. Indirect restoration. Fixed restoration. Removable restoration. Inlay. Onlay . 7 ) Crown. 8 ) Bridge . 9) Veneer . 10) Dental Implant.
Direct Restoration. A restoration prepared for immediate placement & does not require external fabrication. e .g fillings. Require sufficient amount of tooth structure. Less time consuming. Inexpansive . (Dental amalgam, Dental Composites),
Indirect Restoration Processed & fabricated outside oral cavity. Often require adhesive/luting cement for adhesion. Time consuming. Expansive. (Gold, Porcelain)
Fixed Restoration (Fixed Appliance/Fixed Prosthesis) Intended to remain in patient’s mouth. May remain fixed for indefinite time period (Crown, Bridge) May remain fixed for a specified time period (Space maintainers, Fixed orthodontic appliance)
Removable Restoration (Removable Appliance/Removable Prosthesis) Can be removed on routine basis. Used to perform specific function (replacement of teeth, removable orthodontic appliance)
Inlay Indirect restoration. Made to fit in prepared cavity. Restores one or more tooth surfaces. May possibly include more than one cusps. (Gold inlay, Ceramic inlay)
Onlay Inderect restoration. Replaces one or more cusps and adjoining occlusal surfaces. (Gold onlay , Ceramic onlay )
Crown Called as “CAP” in layman language. Indirect restoration. Covers the entire tooth. Used to improve shape, function & appearance of tooth. (Metal crown, Porcelain crown)
Bridge (Fixed Partial Denture) Indirect restoration. Used to replace one or more missing teeth. Cemented to one or more adjacent teeth. (Metal bridge, Ceramic bridge)
Veneer Can be fabricated both directly or indirectly. Replaces the facial aspect of anterior teeth. (Ceramic veneers, Composite veneers)
Denture Removable, Indirect restoration. Used to replace one or more teeth. May be Partial or Complete. May be made of acrylic or metal.
Overdenture Indirect appliance/Prosthesis Usually a complete denture. Fabricated to rest over dental implant or retained roots.
Dental Implant Replacement of the natural roots. Placed within the jaw bone. Used to support a crown , bridge or a denture.
