SUTURE MATERIALS AND SUTURING TECHNIQUES Dr. Amit Agrawal

What is a suture? Suture is a stich or series of stiches made to secure apposition Of the edges of a surgical or traumatic wound. What is a suture material ? It is an artificial fiber (s) used to keep wound together until they hold themselves.

Goals of suturing Wound edge apposition Provide adequate tension Maintain hemostasis Aid in wound healing Avoid wound infection Produce aesthetically pleasing scar by approximating wound edges.

Knot Components of a knot. LOOP: created by knot. KNOT: itself, which is composed of a number of tight throws. 3. EARS: which are the cut ends of the suture.

Types Of Knots

Suture Removal All sutures being foreign bodies cause irritation to the tissues and hence have the potential to cause scarring or infection. Non-absorbable sutures are best removed after a period of 7-8 days. The suture area is cleaned with saline and the suture thread is lifted above The epithelium surface. The suture is cut as close to the tissue as possible, to avoid dragging the contaminated suture materials through tissues. The suture is then pulled towards the incision line to prevent dehiscence.

Reasons for failure of sutures Breakage Cuts out Knot slips Extruded suture Resorbs too rapidly Removed too early.
