Describe the waltz step
and their characteristics;
Reporter: Ray Mark A. Llaguno
Basic step: The basic step is the box step,
which is named for the box or square
pattern it creates on the floor. The box
step is made up of two half boxes, a
forward half box and a backward half
box, each with three steps.
Rise and fall: The waltz is
characterized by a rise and fall action.
Sway: The waltz involves swaying on
side steps.
Feet remain in contact with the floor:
The feet stay in contact with the floor
throughout the dance, creating a
smooth, gliding look.
Counter-clockwise progression: The waltz
progresses in a counter-clockwise
direction.
Smooth frame: The waltz is characterized
by a smooth frame for balance and control.
Elegant gracefulness: The waltz is known
for its elegant gracefulness.
Romantic feel: The waltz can have a
romantic and sometimes sad feel.
Natural turn: On the first beat, the lead
dancer takes a step forward, then slides
and rotates on the second beat, and
finally brings their foot down on the
third beat.
Reverse turn: More advanced dancers
can add a reverse turn, which is the same
steps as the natural turn, but performed
by the follower instead of the leader.
The waltz originated in 17th and 18th
century Germanic dances, and the name
comes from the German word walzen,
which means "to roll, turn, or glide".
