What is it? The word determiner it self says, it determines something.. Nouns being naming words, they are linked to other words with various types of references.. A Determiner is a small word that shows the type of reference regarding the noun used after it.
Can you find them? A small test.. Lets see wheatear you can find the determiner-first one is done for you… This is a fountain pen. This is the house you were looking for. Give me some apples. I don’t have enough money!
Its Kinds… Now when we have known what they are, lets see their kinds- Indefinite Determiners: ( a and an ) Lets take the example we saw earlier- This is a fountain pen. Here ‘a’ pen means, any pen so their reference is not particular or definite. So they are the indefinite ones. Definite determiners: (the) We used- This is the house you were looking for. Here we speak about the Particular house(noun). Hence they are the Definite ones. Note: ‘The’ is never used before the proper nouns.
Possessive Determiners: It is a word that shows possession and is followed by a noun . There are 7 possessive determiners- my, our, your, his, her, its, their It is confusing- possessive pronouns and possessive determiners seem to be similar, Note : The determiners are always followed by nouns but pronouns are never followed by nouns. Lets observe these examples- Determiners-(possessive) Pronouns-(possessive) This is my pen. This pen is mine. This is our school. This school is ours. This is your bag. This bag is yours. Their shoes are these. These shoes are theirs.
Demonstrative Determiners: This shirt is yours. That bag is mine. These books are mine. Those are your pens. The determiners, this,that,these and those. In the above sentences point out which person or thing is meant. These are also followed by nouns. Numeral Determiners: The determiners linked with the numbers are called so. These are further divided into- Definite numerals- They tell us the exact numbers Ex- There are two books over there. Indefinite numerals- They do not tell the exact number. Ex- There are a few books over there. Distributive numerals- They refer to each one of a number. Ex- Every person should do his duty. Each player has his own style of playing.
Determiners of Quantity: Determiners linked with quantities are called so. Can you find them?..first one is done for you.. I have brought a whole bread. I don’t have enough time! He brought a dozen of balloons. I just need a part of it. Pre-Determiners: If two determiners occur before a noun, The preceding determiner is called so. All the players were appreciated by the fans. All those girls are planning for a dance show. In the above statements, the word underlined is a pre- determiner and the word which are bold are determiners.
A small test.. Sort out the determiners in the paragraph below- The crow is a very common bird. It is a noisy bird that keeps cawing all the time. It has two legs, many feathers and a sharp beak. Its claws are very strong. It can feed on any food that it can get. Both of the wings of this cunning bird are very strong too ,and it can fly long distances at a stretch. Most crows cannot see another crow in danger. Several crows gather to help their companion. In short, all the crows are not always alike. Thank you
