HMW statements translate a challenge into an opportunity for
design

Brainstorms tend to work well when anchored by an
appropriate problem statement, framed as HMW

Suggests that a solution is possible

Doesn’t suggest a particular solution

Focused enough to limit confusion

Rooted in the previous Design Thinking work

Open enough to encourage creativity

Radical, not incremental

Use your intuition to get a feel for creating appropriate “How Might We”
statements.

Consider the statements below. What do you think?

Challenge: Reimagining travel for frequent flyers at Indira Gandhi
International (IGI) Airport, Delhi in the COVID 19 scenario
How might we make (IGI) Indira Gandhi International Airport safer for
flyers/travellers?
How might we increase compliance to safety measures (mask wearing,
physical distancing, etc.) among travellers?
How might we create a safer in-flight experience for travellers?

Develop a shared vision around your problem (3 lines)

Ask where things are now?(current situation) (4-5 lines)

What behavioural issue is the biggest dragon? (1 line)

What is a ‘How Might We…” statement that we can design
ideas around? (2 lines)
