Primary Epithelial Band
●What is primarily epithelial band?
●What is dental lamina?
●What is vestibular lamina?
Primary epithelial band -After 37 days of embryonic life/intrauterine life a horseshoe shaped band of
odontogenic epithelium appears around the mouth in the presumptive upper and lower jaw. Each band
of epithelium called primary epithelial band.
DENTAL LAMINA &
VESTIBULAR LAMINA
During the 7th week IUL(Intrauterine life) each primary epithelial band begins to devite
2 sub process. The lingual process or inner aspect of primary epithelial band is called
dental lamina.
Functions /Derivatives :
First phase -initiation of deciduous dentition at the 8th week of IUL
Second phase-Initiation of permanent / successors by successional lamina
1
at 5 to 8
month of IUL
Third phase-initiation of permanent molar 5 month of IUL to 5 years
The buccal process or outer aspect of primary epithelial band is called vestibular
… lamina. It is also termed as lip furrow band.
. Functions/Derivatives :
.. .. It's form the vestibule between the portion of the jaws and lips and cheeks
INITIATION OF TOOTH
DEVELOPMENT
The initiation of tooth development begins at 37 days (6th week)
of embryonic life with localized proliferation of oral epithelium
and formation of a continuous horseshoe shaped band of
thickened epithelium in the location of upper and lower jaws.
A key feature of the initiation of tooth development is the formation of
localized thickenings or placodes within the primary epithelial bands.
Dental placodes are believed to
initiate formation of the various tooth families.
Formation and growth of placodes is believed to involve the
transcription factor p63, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and ectodysplasin
(Eda), among others. Defects in these pathways lead to ectodermal
dysplasias characterized by missing teeth (oligodontia) and misshapen
teeth.
TOOTH GERM
The tooth germ is an aggregation of cells that eventually forms a
tooth. These cells are derived from the ectoderm of the first
pharyngeal arch and the ectomesenchyme of the neural crest.
The tooth germ is organized into three parts:
A.Enamel Organ
B.Dental Papilla
C.Dental Follicle
ENAMEL ORGAN/ DENTAL ORGAN
The enamel organ, also known as dental organ, is a cellular aggregaton
seen in histologic sections of a developing tooth. It lies above a
condensation of cells called dental papila.
The enamel organ is made up
of the following parts:
A.Inner enamel epithelium,
B.Outer enamel epithelium, and
C.Stellate reticulum.
DENTAL PAPILLA
Ball of condensed ectomesenchymal cells . The cells adjacent
to the inner enamel epithelium will enlarge and later
differentiate into odontoblasts.
Derivatives :
●Dentin
●Pulp
DENTAL FOLLICLE
The ectomesenchyme that encircle the both the enamel
organ amd the dental papilla is called dental follicle.
Derivatives :
●Cementum
●Periodontal ligament
●Adjacent bone
Stages of tooth development
1.Bud stage -8th week-epithelial ingrowth into ectomesenchyme
2.Cap stage - 9th to 10th weeks -further epithelial growth
3.Bell stage -11th to 12th weeks- histo and morpho differentiation
4.Appositional stage - varies per tooth- formation of enamel and dentin of crown
5.Root formation -varies per tooth - formation of dentin and cementum of root
6.Eruption
BUD STAGE
Bud stage is characterized by rounded localized growth of epithelium.
Surrounded by proliferating mescenchyme cell which are packed cloely
beneath and around the epithelial bud.
In the bud stage, the enamel organ consist of perpherally located low
columner cells and centrally located polygonal cell.
CAP STAGE
Cap stage is characterized by continuation of the ingrowthof the oral epithelium
into the mesenchyme.Tooth bud of thedental lamina proliferates unequally in
different parts of the bud form a cap shape tissue attached to the remaining dental
lamina.
