WHAT IS HERITAGE ??? F eatures   belonging  to the  culture  of a  particular   society , such as  traditions ,  languages , or  buildings , that were  created  in the past and still have  historical   importance . A country's heritage is all the qualities, traditions, or  features  of life there that have  continued  over many years and have been  passed  on from one  generation  to another. You are the reflection of the heritage you grew up in...

Natural heritage sites are restricted to those natural areas that furnish outstanding examples of  Earth’s record of life or its geologic processes , provide excellent examples of ongoing ecological and biological evolutionary processes , contain natural phenomena that are rare, unique, superlative, or of outstanding beauty, or furnish habitats for rare or endangered animals or plants or are sites of exceptional biodiversity. UNESCO natural heritage sites: Kaziranga National P ark , Assam The Western Ghats (The Sahyadri Mountain Range , one of seven UNESCO’s natural heritage sites.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE A World Heritage Site is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by the  United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) . The sites are judged to contain " cultural  and  natural  heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to  humanity ".  As of July 2021, a total of 1,154 World Heritage Sites (897 cultural, 218 natural, and 39 mixed properties) exist across  167 countries . With 58 selected areas,  Italy  is the country with the most sites on the list. UNESCO Headquarters, Paris

ORIGIN: The primary  impetus  for the adoption of the World Heritage Convention was the construction of the  Aswan High Dam . In 1959 the governments of the  United Arab Republic   and   Sudan  turned to UNESCO for help in salvaging the ancient sites and monuments of  Egyptian Nubia . The sites were threatened with destruction by the  great lake  which would build up behind the new dam at  Aswān . UNESCO responded with an appeal to the international  community  for assistance, and the result was the largest archaeological rescue operation in  history . Aswān, Egypt: Abu Simbel NOTHING IS ART IF IT DOESN’T COME FROM NATURE.

TIMELINE: 1959: UNESCO launches an international campaign 1962: UNESCO adopts the Recommendation on the Safeguarding of the Beauty and Character of Landscapes and Sites . 1968: The World Conservation Union (IUCN) develops a proposal similar to the World Heritage Trust for its members. 1975: The Convention becomes operational, upon ratification by the first twenty countries. 1976: The General Conference establishes the World Heritage Committee and World Heritage Fund. 1978: The first twelve sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List.

INDIAN HERITAGE India is a land of varied  cultures and traditions.  People from numerous castes, religions, and creeds reside in our country. Each ethnic group in our country has its own tale of origin and its set of unique traditions and culture . They have all contributed to the making of Indian history and culture. INDIA AS A HUB OF HERITAGE The Great Himalayan National Park  is a  national park  in  India , located in  Kullu  region in the state of  Himachal Pradesh . The Great Himalayan National Park is a  habitat  to numerous flora and more than 375  fauna   species. In June 2014, GHNP was added to the  UNESCO  list of  World Heritage Sites ,  under the criterion of "outstanding significance for biodiversity conservation". The Pink city, Jaipur (Rajasthan) , has been declared a  UNESCO  World Heritage Site . The walled city of Jaipur in Rajasthan, was  founded in 1727 AD  under the patronage of  Sawai Jai Singh II . The city's urban planning shows an exchange of ideas from ancient  Hindu  and modern  Mughal  as well as  Western cultures .

WORLD HERITAGE DAY (18 TH APRIL) April 18 is marked as the World Heritage Day or International Day for Monuments and Sites. The International Council on Monuments and Sites ( ICOMOS ) encourages cultural heritage and range of the world’s monuments and heritage sites on this day. The idea behind observing World Heritage Day is to make people of different geographical regions meet with each other and share information about their history, heritage and traditions .

HERITAGE CLUBS The idea of setting up Heritage Club in schools across the country began in 2002 to make the students aware and be proud of the richness of the natural and cultural heritage in their own locality, state and country. It was done with the motive of creating awareness and participation in heritage related activities among the students. 

PURPOSE OF THESE CLUBS IN SCHOOLS C reating awareness and participation in heritage related activities… U nderstand history and society… I nculcate values of respect for diversity and tolerance... Protect and conserve necessary actions and measures... Instil a sense of social responsibility towards preserving our common heritage…

HOW CAN A STUDENT PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE ? By forming different volunteer groups from every schools to maintain the heritages… By raising awareness on the importance and preservation of heritages through rally, poster, pamphlet, playcard, etc.. By informing the police and even the reporter in case the area of heritage site is encroached…
