●Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your
blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too
high.
●Blood glucose is your main source of energy
and comes from the food you eat.
●Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas,
helps glucose from food get into your cells to
be used for energy.
●Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are the main types.
WHAT IS DIABETES?

Symptoms of diabetes include

●Increased thirst and urination
●Increased hunger
●Fatigue
●Blurred vision
●Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands
●Sores that do not heal
●Unexplained weight loss

●Fiber is encouraged for everyone: 20-35 grams/day.

●Helps control blood sugar levels.

●Fiber, particularly soluble fiber can slow the absorption of sugar and
help improve blood sugar levels. A healthy diet that includes insoluble
fiber may also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Good sources of fiber:
●Whole grain cereals
●Fruits
●Vegetables
●Beans and peas
●Barley, oatmeal,

Sweeteners and Diabetes




Low calorie/ Zero calorie sweeteners are safe for people with
diabetes when consumed within recommended levels.

●Saccharin
●Sucralose
●Stevia

PROTEIN AND DIABETES



Protein is the major functional and structural component of
all the cells of the body.
●Consumption of good quality protein is recommended.
●Restrict protein if you have an early kidney dysfunction.

●Found in many types of stick margarine, fast foods, and baked
