1. Introduction
It has been observed that some elements of second
periodshow similarities with the elements of the third
periodpresent diagonally to each other,though
belonging to different groups.
This is called Diagonal Relationship.

2. Definition:-
A diagonal relationship is said to exist between certain
pairs of diagonally adjacent element in the secondand
third periods of the periodic table.
Thus,
thesimilarity in properties of elementspresent diagonally is
called Diagonal Relationship.

•The cause of Diagonal Relationship is the similarity in
properties such as electronegativity, ionisation enthalpy,
atomic size, etc between the diagonal elements.
•For example On movingfrom left to right across a
period,theelectronegativityincreasesand while moving
down a group electronegativitydecreases.
•Therefore on moving diagonally, the two opposing
tendencies almost cancel outand the electronegativity
value remains almost same as we move diagonally.
•Thus, the diagonal pairs have many similar properties.
