WHAT ARE DIETARY / NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS? Dietary supplements (also called food supplements or nutritional supplements) are products designed to give you nutrients that might be missing from your diet. A dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that contains a dietary ingredients, intended to supplement the diet. 4

EFFECTIVENESS Some dietary supplements can help you get adequate amounts of  essential nutrients if you don’t eat a nutritious variety of foods . However , supplements can’t take the place of the variety of foods that are important to a healthy eating routine.  5

EFFECTIVENESS Some dietary supplements can improve overall health and help manage some health conditions. For example :  Calcium and vitamin D help keep bones strong and reduce bone loss.  Folic acid decreases the  risk of certain birth defects. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils might help some people with heart disease.  6

FORMS OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS Dietary supplements can be found in many forms such as liquids, tablets, soft gels, capsules, or powders. They can also be in other forms such as a bars. Product regardless of what form they comes in are placed in a special category under the general umbrella of foods, not drugs, and requires the every single supplements be labeled a nutritional/dietary supplement (FDA.Gov,2014) 9

SAFETY AND RISKS: Supplements contain active ingredients that can cause side effects, especially when taken at high doses, instead of prescribed medicines, or with multiple supplements. They can increase bleeding risks, alter anesthesia response, and interact with certain medicines. Supplements are being added to everyday food items, leading to excessive intake. Overconsumption can increase risks of negative side effects, such as vitamin A and iron deficiency, which can cause headaches, liver damage, and birth defects . 10

If you use dietary supplements frequently, in large amounts, in place of prescription medications, or in combination with other supplements, you are more likely to experience negative effects. Certain supplements may alter your reaction to anesthesia or raise your risk of bleeding if you take them right before surgery. SAFETY AND RISKS: 11

SAFETY AND RISKS: Certain medications and supplements may combine in ways that could be problematic. Vitamin K can reduce the ability of the blood thinner warfarin to prevent blood from clotting St. John's wort can speed the breakdown of many medicines and reduce their effectiveness (including some antidepressants, birth control pills, heart medications, anti-HIV medications, and transplant drugs) Antioxidants supplements, such as vitamins C and E, might reduce the effectiveness of some types of cancer chemotherapy. 12
