What is listening? Listening is the absorption of the meanings of words and sentences by the brain Listening leads to understanding of facts and ideas Listening is considered to be the one of the most important part of the oral communication
Process of Listening HEARING :- It is a physical response Hearing is understanding of sound waves You must hear to listen, but you need not listen to hear ATTENTION :- Brain permits only a select few to come into focus- this selective perception is known as attention An important requirement for effective listening is attention
Process of Listening UNDERSTANDING :- To understand symbols we have seen and heard, we must analyze the meaning of the words we have percei ved REMEMBERING: - It is important listening process because it means that an individual has not only received and clarified a message but has also added it into the mind’s storage bank.
Process of Listening EVALUATING - It is a stage in which active listeners participate; it is at these point that the active listener weighs evidence ,sorts fact from opinion, and determines the presence . RESPONDING - This stage requires that the receiver complete the process through verbal and/or nonverbal feedback; because the speaker has no other way to determine if a message has been received, this stage becomes the only overt means by which the sender may determine the degree of success in transmitting the message.
Difference between Hearing and Listening Hearing:- Hearing & listening are completely different things It is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear Hearing is a physiological process in which vibrations are detected by the ear and then converted into nerve impulses and sent to the brain
Difference between Hearing and Listening Listening:- Listening is process of becoming aware of the sound signals entered through ears and modified by nervous system Your interpretation ability helps you to react to that hearing Listening requires a person to pay attention to the speaker and provide feedback Listening is a process of communication, where if the person is not listening it can cause a break in communication
Types of listening Active Listening:- Attentive listening with careful consideration and concentration becomes active listening The ability to listen actively can improve personal relationships through reducing conflicts, strengthening cooperation, and fostering understanding Passive Listening:- Passive listening is hearing what a person says without responding to them in any way In passive listening, nothing of the speaker's words goes into the mind of the listener In passive listening, listeners are physically present though mentally absent
Types of listening Comprehensive Listening :- Comprehensive listening is the name we give to the situation where the listener’s primary concern is to understand the message For example, we listen to lectures or instructions from teachers and what we learn depends on how well we listen Empathetic Listening:- Listening with care and regard to give advice, or to solve problem is empathetic listening Therapeutic listening is a special type of empathetic listening
Types of listening Appreciative listening:- Appreciative listening is listening to something with a positive attitude in order to appreciate it That which provides appreciative listening for one person may provide something else for another. For example, hard rock music is a source of appreciative listening for one person. But may not be the same for other Critical Listening:- Listening to solve problems, to think of a solution, to suggest options etc. requires critical listening In this type , the listener listens with attention but not for his/her comprehension, but to evaluate or judge the speaker
