Digital Citizenship Using technology appropriately

Digital citizenship Why is it important? Do you use the internet to share information about yourself or others, communicate with friends, comment on what you see online, play games, get material for an assignment or buy stuff online? If you answered YES to any of these then you are a digital citizen. Why is digital citizenship important? Get the best out of the internet AND keep yourself and others safe and healthy in an online world by being a POSITIVE digital citizen. http://www.digitalcitizenship.nsw.edu.au/Sec_Splash/index.htm

What does this tell us? I can only think about one thing at a time At first, this claim can sound fantastic. I can talk on a cell phone while driving to work, and I can compose complex sentences while typing. But , if you stop to reflect on it, you can only do those things at the same time because at least one of them is automatic . If I actually have to think about something then I have to give it my full attention.

What are we really doing? New research claims that multi tasking is a myth. What we are really doing is learning to switch tasks very quickly . If one of these tasks is ‘automatic’ – like driving or typing – then it seems like we can do 2 things at once. The ability to multitask “depends on what the tasks are ”.   The brain is incapable of focusing on two things at the same time. A frontal part of the brain called Brodmann area 10 is supposedly responsible for the brain switching from task to task, and whereas we may think we are multitasking we are actually getting good at switching from task to task more seamlessly.

Why do we try to multi-task? Is there NO CHOICE??? Text messages Emails Facebook posts Phones ringing TV coverage Tweeting Online shopping Making sure you get the tickets to the show

What can we do? ….new research that reveals the average American worker is interrupted every three minutes, and it may take as long as 23 minutes to get back on track http://agbeat.com/tech-news/workers-interrupted-every-3-minutes-by-technology-how-to-stay-productive/

What can we do? T urn off push notifications. Go to the settings in every social network and do not let it text you or ping you every time someone updates or tags you. Only look at notifications when you have the time to go to that social network or email service. Time block – be strong! Use a service like Notify Me Not to declutter your email inbox technology to battle technology and boost productivity. Any.do , Asanda , Due, and Do (free apps) are all popular task management tools to keep you focused.

Social networking "You only live once. So make sure you spend 15 hours on the internet every day, desperately seeking the validation of strangers." Chris Rock's Twitter account

The Question…. Are you really listening?

When is it NOT OK to use technology? WHY? At an important social event: funeral / wedding the cinema / theatre a tennis match When driving

What sort of selfies do you take? Comment on following pictures. What is happening? Where is it? Who is involved? Is it appropriate? Why do you think they did it?

Photos can lie The photographer who captured President Barack Obama, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and UK Prime Minister David Cameron taking a selfie at Nelson Mandela's memorial service on Tuesday insists Michelle Obama's stern reaction seen in the photo was not directed at the group . " I later read on social media that Michelle Obama seemed to be rather peeved on seeing the Danish prime minister take the picture," Roberto Schmidt, the Agence France- Presse photographer who took the photo, wrote in a blog post . " But photos can lie. In reality, just a few seconds earlier the first lady was herself joking with those around her, Cameron and Thorning-Schmidt included. Her stern look was captured by chance .“ Schmidt claims he was surprised by the controversy his photos generated.   “I took these photos totally spontaneously, without thinking about what impact they might have," he wrote .   " At the time, I thought the world leaders were simply acting like human beings, like me and you. I guess it’s a sign of our times that somehow this image seemed to get more attention than the event itself. Go figure .”   http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/20278551/photographer-on-michelle-obamas-reaction-to-selfie-photos-can-lie/

apology This Tumblr launched on August 27. I am writing this two days later, after hundreds of thousands of people have seen it. “ I’m one of the people on your tumblr blog, and I have to say you made me realize how much of an idiot I made myself look. I’ve had people messaging me and calling me stuff, all of which I obviously deserve. I know you probably think I’m just an idiot who is willing to put pictures like that on the internet, and you’re not too wrong. You’ve really made me think about it, and I’d like to thank you for that. Now I’m going to beg that you remove the picture, and I doubt you would, because you will gain absolutely no benefit from doing so, but from one severely regretful person to another person, please, do so. Sorry for being such a ****.” This was big of him, I thought, and no one photo—even a thumbs-up selfie at the Holocaust Memorial—defines a person. We agreed on the solution you see: a blocked-out face and blurred-out Twitter handle, and his apology. A reporter recently asked me if I thought these selfie -takers defined a spoiled generation, and I replied that no, absolutely, they did not. There’s a lot of youthful stupidity on display here, but every prior generation would have embarrassed themselves publicly, were they equipped with the technology to do so. This Tumblr captures people in moments they haven’t fully thought through, but that doesn’t mean they’re incapable of thinking further.

In full flow: Mr Gilbert conducting the New York Philharmonic. The phone went off in the front row during the final and most moving bars of Mahler's Ninth symphony. Gilbert stopped the performance. http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=uub0z8wJfhU

What about at University? When is it OK? When the device is used as an aid to learning: Translating words Note taking Looking up topics When is it NOT OK ? Texting Watching youtube Checking social media like Facebook “These devices become an indispensable sort of thing for the students. And nothing should be indispensable. Multitasking is good, but I want them to do more tasking in my class.” Stanford Professor

Who cares? Distracting for the student who is using the device in the wrong way Very distracting for other students Class laptops with internet access are like all technologies – they can be used to enhance your ability to learn, or they can distract you. “…surfing the web during a review session. Seriously, why go to a completely optional thing if you’re not listening?”

What should teaching staff do? Ban devices “As a student, I love using my laptop in class. However, I once took an ENGLISH class in which they were outlawed, and got A LOT more out of it as a result .” Make those with laptops sit at the back ? Do not post lectures online until AFTER the class In tutorials students should be much more engaged with doing tasks - so technology can and should be used to enhance those activities Any suggestions?

Appropriate academic (& social) online behaviour How to behave in blogs / wikis / forums in the academic context Think before you post! If you would not say it in a public place then do not post it Stay on topic Is what you are saying appropriate? Be courteous and considerate Keep an open mind. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Don’t stir up a drama. Even online people have feelings  …real people are behind the posts
