Definition It is a serious bacterial infection that Usually affects the mucous membranes of the nose and Throat.

Epidemiology Took it's name from Greek word ‘dipthera' Means (Hide/leather) In the Past disease was called as general disease or killer disease because there was no treatment and was the cause of high mortality in Children.

Incubation Period The incubation period of diphtheria is 2 to 6 days. Some times it may be longer.

PORTAL OF ENTRY Respiratory tract - Common Non respiratory route – skin where cuts Wound and ulcers Umbilicus in new born

Etiology The causative organism of diphtheria is Corynebacterium Diphtheriae . It is a gram positive, non- mortile . non- Spore forming Club Shape bacillus

Clinical manifestation Sign and Symptoms may vary from mild to Severe. They begin with a Sore throat and fever. Fever of 38 degree °C or Above. Chills Cough Head ache and vomiting Bluish colouration of skin due to lack of oxygen.

Vaccine The best way to Prevent diphtheria is to get vaccinated. The diphtheria Vaccine is combined with Vaccines for tetanus as Whooping cough Known as DPT Vaccine. There are 3 dose of DPT is given DPT-1 In 6 weeks DPT-2 In 10 weeks DPT-3 In 14 weeks

Vaccine for Better Prevention we give 1 Booster Dose. DPT Booster 16-24 month The quantity of DPT Vaccine is 0.5 ml DPT Vaccine is given into Intramuscular.

Management In any Suspected diphtheria immediately Start treatment with antitoxin and antibiotics. Dose of antitoxin depends on the Site and extent of disease Isolate the child.
