Why do we need them 1 in 7 or 15% population live with some form of disability Largest minority group Numbers increasing with trama , chronic diseases, lbw , ageing etc 80% in developing countries 70% in rural Understanding these will help us to reduce the burden of disabilities

COMMUNICATION/ DISABILITY ETIQUETTES Don’t assume they need help, ALWAYS ASK Speak DIRECTLY , not to the caretaker AVOID outdated terms like handicapped, crippled or retarded or physically challenged, differently abled person with a disability rather than disabled person person who uses a wheelchair rather than wheelchair bound AVOID NEGATIVE/DISEMPOWERING words like victim, sufferer person with polio rather than polio victim
COMMUNICATION/ DISABILITY ETIQUETTES Don’t touch the crutches or wheelchair, part of personal space While guiding a blind person, offer your arm, don’t take his DON’T OBSCURE your face while talking to a person with hearing impairment RESPECT the privacy , allow him to discuss when he feels comfortable Don’t use BABY TALK to people with developmental disability DON’T TAKE DECISIONS for them Respect diversity, many disabilities are hidden
