DISASTER MANAGEMENT Name : Simran Class: IX-B Roll No.35 School Name: N.K. Bagrodia Public School Topic: Disaster Mangement Academic Session: 2024-25

ACKNOWLEDGMENT I would like to express my special thanks to my Mentor M rs.Rohita Gupta for her time and efforts she Provided me during the completion of this project .her Useful suggestion and advice were very helpful to me During the completion of this project. This project Helped me in broadens my knowledge and skills. I Must thanks my parents for their unwavering support And guidance.

INTRODUCTION what are natural disasters? A natural disaster are extreme ,sudden events caused by environmental factors such as storms, floods, droughts, cyclone , earthquake, and volcanic eruption What is disaster management? Disaster management means preparation and protection of lives and property during the times of disaster like earthquake, flood etc.

What is earthquake? An earthquake is a sudden tremor, movement of earth ‘s crust, which is usually lasts only for a very short time. It originates naturally at or below the surface of the earth.

CAUSE OF AN EARTHQUAKE Earthquakes are caused by disturbance deep down inside the uppermost layer [lithosphere] of the earth lithospheric plates or tectonic plates. These plates moves very slow [a few millimeters every Year. This movement is due to the movement of the molten magma inside the earth. The movement of these plates cause changes on the surface of the earth which may cause an earthquake

The rest of the plates, however, keep on moving this causes a tension to build up in the plates when the force of moving plates overcomes the friction at the edges, all of their stored energy get released. The earth vibrate around its point, the vibration at the point of the release of energy give rise to shock or seismic waves. These seismic waves shake the earth as they moves outwards through it.

THE FOCUS Focus is the point at which tension is released. Since this is often deep below the surface of a earth and difficult to map its location is specified by the point on the earth surface directly above. This point is known as epic centre of the earthquake. The Seismic waves moves outwards from the epic centre.

PREDICTING AN EARTHQUAKE It is difficult to predict, when and where the next earthquake might occur but there is an instrument call seismometer, to find out the source of seismic waves earthquake can be investigated by other potential clues like tilting/ bulging of building and changes in the earth magnetic field.

SEISMOMETER

MEASURING AN EARTHQUAKE Geologists usually express the intensity (power) of an earthquake in terms of a ‘magnitude’ on a scale known as Richter scale. The Richter Scale is named after Dr. Charles F. Richard. This scale is not a simple linear scale. On the scale an increase of two in the magnitude, means 10^2 or Hundred times more destructive energy. Similarly an increase of three in the magnitude means 10^3 or Thousand Times more destructive energy and so on.

RICHTER SCALE

EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE Earthquake can cause damage to the building, bridges, dams. Earthquake in many case may cause great loss of life. Earthquake can also cause floods and landslides. Landslides, Triggered by earthquake often cause more destruction than the earthquake themselves. Sometimes the earthquake occurs beneath the ocean flow such earthquake can led to tsunami. One Such example of this incident is a major tsunami occurred in the Indian ocean on 26 th December 2024.

PROTECTION AGAINST EARTHQUAKE All the buildings in seismic zones need be designed so that they can withstand major tremors. It is advisable to make the structure simple so that it is easy to escape. Since some buildings may catch fire (due to an earthquake) it is necessary that all the buildings (Specially the tall ones) have their fire fighting equipments in order.

Safer places, indoors as well as outdoors must be clearly identified. An Emergency communication exit plan should be made available. Disaster Management supplies should be available on hand.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DURING EARTHQUAKE For a Person Present inside a Building Stay Away from Tall and Heavy Objects that may fall on you. Take a shelter under a table and stay there till the shaking stops. Don’t get up if you are in a bed Protect your head with pillows.

For a person outside in the open Find a clear spot away from building trees and bridges. Don’t come out if sitting in a moving vehicle.

Stay calm for a while accept after shocks. Be aware of possible tsunami if you live in costal area. Carefully inspect supplies. Use telephones only in emergency. Stay away from damaged area. Help the injured ones. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

Disaster management is important for saving countless lives, speed up peoples recovery and minimize the loss of property. Disaster management rescue from immediate danger and stabilization of physical and emotional condition of survivors. Disaster Management help in lessening the impact of disaster. It Minimize the effects of disaster. WHY IS DISASTER MANGEMENT IMPORTANT
