Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, Presentation
For my multimedia presentation, I selected the Emancipation Proclamation, one of the most important documents in American history. Signed on January 1, 1863, during the Civil War, the Proclamation asserted that all enslaved people in the Confederate states were to be freed. But what most people do not know—what many history textbooks get wrong—is that the Emancipation Proclamation was not a real "freedom document." Why? Because at the time it was signed, there were actually no enslaved people in the Union that Lincoln could free.
I chose history and philosophy as the two disciplines to examine this event. From a historical perspective, I will investigate the Proclamation's immediate and far-reaching impacts on American society, its political life, and the war itself. From a philosophical point of view, I will discuss the ethical dimensions of Lincoln's momentous decision, using as my basic framework the important concepts of freedom, justice, and human rights.
