What comes to your mind when you hear the word communication?
How would you define Communication?
THE DISCIPLINE OF COMMUNICATION The Discipline of Communication deals with how humans use verbal and non-verbal messages to create meaning in various contexts. This can be from one person to another, from person to group, in a government setting, private sector setting, civil society setting, school setting, and community setting to mass audiences across cultures using a variety of channels and media.
THE DISCIPLINE OF COMMUNICATION This discipline is also interested in the impact that communication has on human behavior.
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION: com·mu·ni·ca·tion \ kə -ˌ myü-nə -ˈ kā-shən \ Communication comes from the Latin word “COMMUNIS” a noun word, which means common, communiality , or sharing. Similarly, “COMMUNICARE” is a verb, which means “make something common”.
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION: Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages through verbal or nonverbal means , including speech , or oral communication; writing and graphical representations (such as infographics, maps, and charts); and signs , signals, and behavior. More simply, communication is said to be "the creation and exchange of meaning."
QUESTION… In your own understanding, what is the difference between verbal messages and non-verbal messages?
TRANSMISSION MODEL OF COMMUNICATION The early definitions of communication regard it as a process by which a message is moved or transmitted from one point to another. These definitions fall under the so-called transmission model of communication.
ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
SENDER Person, groups, or institutions that create or produce the message; also referred to as encoder. I s someone who caused something to be sent to a recipient.
MESSAGE The ideas, or meanings, expressed in verbal or non-verbal means, that are transmitted from the source to the receiver. Verbal messages use words to convey meaning; nonverbal messages express meaning through codes such as facial expressions, color, distance (space), touch, pitch, or loudness of sound.
CHANNEL The medium, such as radio, is used to transmit the messages. A re mediums through which you can send a message to its intended audience.
RECEIVER The person, group, or institution to whom the message is intended; also referred to as the decoder. T he person or group of persons who receives the message sent by the sender.
ENCODING Refers to the way of communication source creates the message in a form that can be understood by the receiver. This includes the choice of words, language, and like. T he process of turning thoughts into communication.
DECODING Refers to a processing of the message by the receiver so that he or she is able to understand and react to it. R efers to the process in which the decoder decodes or interprets a message that has been encoded by a source using his experiences and intellect .
ENCODING AND DECODING
NOISE Interference that prevents a message from being accurately understood or interpreted. Noise can be physical noise such as a choppy connection or psychological noise such as stress, the attitude of the communicators towards each other, or about an issue.
NOISE
CONTEXT The situation in which the communication takes place and may include sociocultural factors, the status and roles of the communicators, rules, and the like.
FEEDBACK The response or reaction of the receiver to the message received. T he final step of the process ensures the receiver has received the message and interpreted it correctly as it was intended by the sender.
FEEDBACK
EFFECT Refers to the consequence or result - or lack of result, for that matter – of a communicative act. Communication effects include changes in our knowledge (cognitive effects), our emotions (affective effects), and our behavior.
QUESTION… Let’s Identify again the Elements of Communication… 2. What is the importance of Elements of Communication?
MODELS OF COMMUNICATION PROCESS
WHAT IS MODELS OF COMMUNICATION? Is a pictorial representation of the communication process, ideas, thoughts, and concepts through diagrams, etc. they can be considered to be systematic representation of the process that helps us understand how communication can be carried out. Most models try to describe both verbal and non-verbal communication and often to understand it as an exchange of messages.
According to Harold Lasswell (1948) According to him, communication occurs when: A source sends a message Through a channel or medium To a receiver Producing some effect This definition is conveniently abbreviated as: HAROLD LASSWELL an American political scientist and communications theorist.
I t describes a one-way process within the communication. This model indicates the five major components in the process by posing five questions to describe an act of communication- Who says what to whom through what channels and with what effect? Transmission or Linear Model of Communication
I s the transfer of information from sender to receiver with no place for the response. There isn't any opportunity for the receiver to give feedback to the sender. One-way communication flows from a sender to a receiver, but nothing goes back in return. The sender can use one-way communication to inform, entertain, persuade or command the audience. Some examples of one-way communication include television, radio, writing, speeches, and performances. T ransmission or Linear Model of Communication
According to Wilbur Schramm (1965) He defines communication as a purposeful effort to establish commonness between a source and a receiver. Schramm’s model of communication process says that it is a process that requires three elements: the source , the message , and the destination. WILBUR SCHRAMM is considered the founder of the field of Communication Studies. He was the first individual to identify himself as a communication scholar
According to Wilbur Schramm The process starts with an idea in the mind of the source. This idea is then encoded into a message using signs and sent to the destination. The destination needs to decode and interpret the signs in order to reconstruct the original idea. In response, they formulate their own message, encode it, and send it back as a form of feedback.
According to Westley and MacLean (1957) They expand the definition of communication by including the role of the communicator in the equation. One such communicator is the professional journalist who links news sources with the audience or the advertising company which links business with the consumers. 1 2 3 4
THE RITUAL MODEL OF COMMUNICATION The ritual view of communication is a communications theory proposed by James W. Carey, wherein communication is about representing, maintaining, adapting, and sharing the beliefs of society in time. In short, the ritual view conceives communication as a process that enables and enacts societal transformation. It also helps in the creation of reality. Ritual view is less focused on the message and more focused on the fostering of relationships. This view not only provides information but also confirmation, under the bane of preserving social ritual and structure. Creation and recreation of meanings is focal point of communication in this model. It is also based on shared experiences (sense of community). According to this view, communication is a central daily ritual that helps form and sustain communities. Communication plays a vital role in creation of meaningful human relationship and communities. This view sees communication as cultural rituals. J AMES W. CAREY
THE RITUAL MODEL OF COMMUNICATION Twitter enables the establishment, transformation, and maintenance of societal interaction. For example, Twitter involves both sharing and participation, by way of "tweets", and association and fellowship, by way of "following". At the same time, Twitter users engage in a somewhat ritualized way through the act of "following" particular organizations, individuals, or interests. Moreover, in "following" specific groups or persons Twitter users form "online communities." J AMES W. CAREY
FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
SURVEILLANCE Refers to the news and information role of communication media such as the news media. It tells us what our problems are, how big they are, where the solutions should be directed, how well (or poorly) our solutions have worked, and if, over time, there is improvement or deterioration.
INTERPRETATION Refers to analysis, commentary, context, and other meanings which are found in a message. This function relates to persuasion or the influence of attitudes and behavior.
SOCIALIZATION Refers to the transmission of values and culture within a society and also to the education functions of communication and the media. The mass media plays an important role in socialization in that they provide models and appropriate behavior and attitudes which are the basis of common social values in society.
ENTERTAINMENT Refers to functions related to relaxation, reward, diversion, and reduction of tension. These functions may be performed through a variety of shows, drama, music, novels, and many other forms, which are important as they allow individuals and societies to cope with real-life challenges.
MOBILIZATION Refers to the communication and media’s ability to generate public actions about a social issue, for instance, in relief efforts after a disaster.
