Discussing ‘Interdependency’, ‘ Ostracization ’, ‘Eugenics’ and ‘Disability Pride’

Understanding ‘Interdependency’ Collectivist “ The  interdependence model  privileges the idea that a person with disability exists in a community to which they contribute and from which they receive assistance. Without this community and without including the vulnerable we hurt ourselves and our community. We all lose. Typically, the dependence of those with disability is often physical, and perhaps the dependence of those without disability might be more emotional or spiritual .” (Grills, 2015) ‘Interdependence’ as opposed to ‘Independence’ in all aspects, be it social, physical, mental or economic. The need for each other to “complete” the society. Understanding the idea that a person with disability is a contributing member of society.

Slide 3 Understanding ‘ Ostracization ’ Begins with bias, leading to stereotypes. Less or no conversation Failure to include, no sense of belonging. Creating situations where people with disability cannot participate Exclusive meetings, workshops, seminars or educational places Denial of assimilation and cooperation Supports the concerns of the abled. No representation in any of the fields.

Understanding ‘Eugenics’ The root of it is the sharp categorization that people are either ‘physically fit/complete’ or ‘not physically fit/complete ’. “ The theory posits that efforts should be made to decrease all elements of genetic inferiority from the human race until they no longer exist .” (Ralph,2017) Based on Dalton’s, “Social Darwinism” Elitism, wealth and physical health is justified Efforts to ‘purify’ gene pool People with disability should not reproduce Implemented using policies like forced sterilization, immigration policies, denial of medical facilities among others. Responsible for the Holocaust Fostering ‘desired traits’

Understanding ‘Disability Pride’ Defined “as accepting and honoring each person’s uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity.”  “ Pride comes from celebrating our heritage, disability culture, the unique experiences that we have as people with disabilities, and the contributions that we can give to society .” Challenges stereotypes and institutionalization of ableism. Promotes the idea that disability is natural. Living with disability does not mean compromising on dignity. Disability is a means and not an end. July is celebrated as Disability Pride Month.
