SHAVA VINAASHA PADHHATI (DISPOSAL OF DEAD BODY):

There are different methods of disposal of dead body depending on community of people. Some communities follow very wild methods like offering dead body as food for animals and birds, which is followed in west Afrika by tribes of Wanyam wesis . Tribal people of Kenya threw it in to sea. Parsis in India used to keep dead body over pillar built for the purpose. Egyptians build pyramids along with the dead person’s favorite articles. The manner of disposal is dominated by spiritual concerns and a desire to show respect for the dead, and may be highly ritualized. Many religions as well as legal jurisdictions have set rules regarding the disposal of corpses. Disposal of dead is done by various methods: 1. Burning/Incineration/Cremation Method ( Dahana Padhdhati ) . Traditional Method . Electric Cremation 2. Burial Method ( Bhoosthaapana )

Traditional Method: In India most of the Hindus follow this method. In many places crematoriums are present on the bank of the rivers or the place away from community, especially outside the city. Method: Wooden planks are placed one above the other approximately up to 2 – 3 ft height. over that dead body is placed, over that again wooden pieces are placed to the height of 1 ft, length and beneath should be 7 – 8 ft. by 4ft. respectively. After kindling of fire, it takes about 8 hours for complete burning. Special care should be taken in case of death due to communicable diseases. In this case dead body should be wrapped with cloth dipped in disinfectant.

Crematorium: It should be situated outside the city in an isolated and calm place. Office should have a register to record the name, age, sex, cause of death, place of death, if hospital death then name of the hospital, date and time of death of the person. It should have the materials required for cremation. An assistant for the work is necessary. Advantages: Less place is required. Burning destroys infectious agents, if death is due to communicable disease. It can be adopted in any place including villages. It is ideal and fasted method of disposal of dead body. Disadvantages: Consumption of fuel is more. Causes environment pollution. Takes 3 hours for burning.

Electric cremation: Electric furnace is used for the purpose of cremation. This is commonly found in big cities, where facility of electric furnace and electricity is present. Parts: Furnace Electricity conducting coils, which conduct high voltage current Special iron chambers, which prevents transmission of heat to exterior. Chamber: It is made up of iron, having semicircular entrance, through which only one body can pass through. The body rests on brick stage. The coil is heated to red hot and turns the body in to ashes in about 2-3 hours. Ash can be collected from outside. Advantages: Consumes less time and space. Prevents air pollution and bad odor. Disadvantages: It is expensive. Electric furnace and electricity are necessary . It is not suitable for villages.

Earth Burial: In India, Christians, Muslims and some Hindus adopt this method. Chrictians keep the dead body in the coffins. Muslims bury without coffin. Dead gets decomposed by the action of microbes. The mud which contains more moisture is not suitable for the purpose. The place should be firm. Dimensions: 3-5 ft deep 4 ft broad. 6-6, ft long pit is dug. If body is buried very deep, there is hindrance for the action of microorganisms, which help in decomposition of the body. If depth is lesser than 3 feet some carnivores like dog, fox & jackal may take it out and cause inconvenience, which may lead to bad odor due to decomposition or spread of infectious disease to nearby residents. To prevent it, tombs are built. But it delays decomposition. It takes about 1 year for decomposition of buried bodies. Dead body kept in coffin takes longer period for decomposi t ion. It also depends on the strength of the wood.

Earth Burial: Disadvantages: 1. Infectious disease may spread. 2. Takes long time for decomposition. 3. Requires more space & money to build tombs. 4. It is not suitable for big cities. 5. It produces soil pollution. Advantages: 1.It does not cause air pollution. 2. Saves fuel & money in simple burials. In case of death of lady, body should be cleaned & burnt. After cremation rituals should be performed along with offering gifts.

In case of death of child below 2 years, body should be buried after decoration, in a proper place outside the city, instead of burning.
