Shaping Society through Social Work JOHN CLEEN V. SIONICIO TEACHER

-Maya Angelou Diversity makes for a rich tapestry. We must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value, no matter their color; equal in importance no matter their texture.

What is Social Work?

Social Work Social Work covers almost all social aspects of humans, from conception to death. When you think about it, they are jacks-of-all trades: that’s why training and education are prerequisites to becoming a social worker. A profession and a vocation, is fulfilling and is fueled by vision, motion, and emotion.

How can social work become a vocation for shaping society? Why does social work call for a sense of altruism? How do Filipino values and attributes contribute to the practice of social work? Questions in Social Work……

the place or area where social workers are employed; the type of clients that may be encountered by social workers; the kinds of issues and problems that social workers address; the levels of social work practice; the typical day in the life of a social workers; the career prospects in social work; and the close connection of social work in the life of individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and even the nation. For now, you may begin navigating your way through social work by considering the following:

Never, never, be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way. -Martin Luther King. Jr. When you are blessed or are in a privileged position in society, the greatest contribution you can ever make is to pay if forward. Paying it forward is an act of doing good to someone else as a way of giving back to the kindness that others or the world has bestowed upon you.

Social Work: When to Make a Difference

Social Work It is through a greater appreciation of the discipline of social work that you will be motivated to engage even in the simplest act of kindness and concern toward others. Social work does not need to be institutional, nor be a good a grand gesture of charity. Engaged in social care sees himself or herself in various settings involving personal interactions and services that include caring for, supporting, and assisting people so as to promote and further their well-being. SOCIAL CARE can thus be defined as a form of assistance apart from health care that is offered to people so they can maintain themselves physically and socially.

Defining Social Work

Social Work Profession As a profession of “social change, problem-solving in human relationships, and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being” Social work is the term social welfare , depending on how it is defined ( i,e ., as an institution or as an academic discipline). Social Welfare “encompasses social work [and that they] are primarily related at the level of practice” (Zastrow,1996).

Social work and welfare have various definitions from different references, settings, and expertise, but one thing binds these definitions together: The heart for service.

Relief of psychological distress and material need Social control Providing for basic survival needs Social reform The major historical and contextual functions of social work and social welfare as proposed by Gamrill (1997).

Relief of psychological distress and material need. Through social welfare, people are able to cope better and function effectively in their social environment. Providing for basic survival needs. These needs include adequate nutrition, clothing, shelter, and medical care. It also encompasses the creation of opportunities with the aim of enhancing people’s psychological well-being and their social productivity. Social Control . Social control means promoting an adherence to social norms and minimizing, eliminating, or normalizing deviant behavior. Informal social control- those internalized beliefs and norms and influence in face-to-face exchanges such as ridicule, praise, and ostracism. Formal social control- this is a form of control in which laws, regulations, and actions are implemented by government representatives such as police and social workers.

4. Social reform. A core belief of social workers is that social problems are caused by lack of food, housing, employment, and educational and recreational opportunities, not a unworthiness of individual persons. These social problems and inequities are then best addressed through social reform, which can in turn create a just and more conducive environment for everyone.

Reflect upon! How do you think is psychology related to social work? How do you think can social work help uplift society?

Social services are provided so that the members of society can function effectively within a society. When these members achieve a stable condition, they are able to properly fulfill their roles in this society. Therefore, social services contribute to the attainment of stability. According to Goerge and Wilding (2002), some of the ways on how social services contribute to political stability are as follows: By exhibiting apparent efforts to alleviate problems that might result in serious discontent and that could be used to criticize the current economic and political structure.

2. By defining social problems as caused by individual, family, or group factors rather than by structural and economic factors. 3. Y promoting values and behaviors that support political stability 4. By supporting authority and related hierarchical systems 5. By replacing class conflicts with group systems.
