Decayed –Missed- Filled Dental caries index DENTAL CARIES INDEX FOR CORONAL CARIES By Mahmoud Ahmed Abd-Elmotleb Assistant lecturer op pediatric and community dentistry

Instrument used

Original DMFT D  decayed include catch, softness, cavitation and discoloration due to undermined or demineralized enamel. M missed due to caries only and those indicated for extraction due to caries not include un-erupted, congenitally absent, orthodontically extracted teeth or those missed due to trauma. F filled (temporary or permanent filled) and not include those with recurrent decay

Original DMFT Tooth only counted when its occ or incisial surface is totally exposed or can be exposed by gently reflecting the overlying gingival tissues. Only 28 tooth counted not include 8s or supernumerary teeth. The tooth are considered present even only remaining roots present. The tooth counted one time

Modified DMFT 8s included Temporary restorations considered decayed Only carious cavities are considered as decayed and not include initial chalky white lesions, spots, stained fissures etc. Introduction of DMFS Before age of 30ys M-only include teeth missed due to caries only and at or after 30ys M-include all missed teeth

Modifications of DMFT DMFT used for permanent dentition only DMFS used to surface (anterior has 4 while posterior has 5 surfaces) dmft used for primary dentition only dmfs used to surface For mixed dentition DMF used for permanent dentition while def or df for primary one and e-for primary tooth that present and indicated for extraction due to caries

Not indicate teeth at risk Little benefit for root caries M, m or e components are misleading Can over estimate caries experience in preventive sealed teeth Limitation

Conclusion The subject dentition may be Only primary teeth dmf Only permanent teeth DMF Mixed teeth DMF for permanent def or df for primary

Conclusion Index must be written in separate components as D=--, M=-- and F=-- then the sum of them DMF=-- In cases of mixed dentition DMF and def never to be sum.

Examples

Congenitally missed teeth not counted

Temporary filled teeth counted as d Teeth with recurrent decay counted as d

d= 2 / e=0 / f=0 (def=2) D=4/ M=0/ F=0 (DMF=4) For def To be counted as (e) tooth must be presented and indicated for extraction due to caries

d=3 / e=0 / f=0 (def=3) D=0/ M=0/ F=0 (DMF=0) For def, dmf and DMF radiograph not required But for DMFS, dmfs and defs bite wing radiographes required

For def, dmf and DMF Teeth fractured or restored due to trauma must not be counted

dmfs d=0/ m=0/ f=21 ( dmfs =21) for DMFS, defs or dmfs crown for anterior recorded as 4 f And for posterior as 5f and the same for Decayed, Missed or e components
